It's actually a very long story.
It starts from back during communism, the commies were doing a revival process and trying to remove the Turkish identity in Bulgaria.
We have in the past oppressed our Turkish citizens in other ways, but this is the latest and most relevant, people were forced to change names primarily.
So communism fails horribly and the commies figure it's only a matter of time before Turkey will try to infiltrate those communities and fuel separatism.
The secret police creates the party - DPS (movement for rights and freedoms), funds it, shapes it and with great success the party consistently works in coalitions with almost every government since the fall of socialism.
Like all things excommie, the party is corrupt, populist, but remains true to it's original purpose - keeping Turkey and Erdogan out. They made many of the rich Bulgarian turks what they are.
Recently there was a splinter that was pro-Erdogan, but it will not pass the 4% threshold. They have about 2%.
