From a practical perspective, gender reveals do afford family members and friends the ability to buy the right types of gifts for the incoming baby. Most toys/clothing/accessories are gender specific for babies in America.

I *Think* many Americans want to be "content creators" and amass an audience. Stuff like gender reveals offer an opportunity for regular people to produce slice-of-life media & content that allows them to a) celebrate a new life (social tradition) and b) feed the narcissistic need for an audience
