I'm pretty sure the issue is that she is rich and he is not, the societal setup and expectations means that he probably felt slighted by her proposal. He might think other's will think ill of him if he accepted too. It's not necessarily a moot concern, when such things are important to an individual in regards to success and sociability within a given society/culture, you can't just dismiss them.
