I'm honest. Melbourne and Sydney are way over Madrid except in culinary/cultural areas. They are not as powerful as Madrid, but the average Australian has a much bigger income.

California is a special place. There are a lot of oportunities there.

All that brain drain over the centuries, all that investment in Madrid and opportunity cost of not investing in other places, all those multinationals that are only in Madrid because of it's capital status and not due to intrinsic merit and therefore should have their profits and externalities distributed across the country, all of that is a big reason of why Madrid ranks so highly on development indexes

Madrileños are open minded, and more than half of them were born outside of Madrid.

My reasons for choosing Madrid over BCN after having lived in both:
-Madrid feels more important. It's a more serious city.
-Wider range of people in Madrid. From billionaires to niñas pijas like from the 50s.
-It has a brighter future. The city is growing non stop, meanwhile BCN can't grow because it's located between the mountains and the sea. In Madrid big new neighbourhoods are being built.

Comparing Barcelona to Madrid, to me, looks like comparing Valencia to Barcelona. And the real city has HALF the population.

I'm from Santander, and I use to go to Madrid and Barcelona at least once a year.

I maintain myself. I don't think Madrileños are more open minded that Catalans. Half of Madrileños are fachas, while most catalans are liberals.

Barcelona is more world known and that's because it's more beautiful and has sea.

It also has more cultural offer, at least of what I like (Classical music, Opera, and motorsports)
I also like the location of barcelona, being relatively closer to europe.

However I think you are right when you say that Madrid has better future and feels more serious.
Also BCN is more tourist crowded.

That being said. When I think about a city to live in the future with my gf I don't know why but we imagine ourselves in Madrid, as if it was better.

I would give them a draw, but with Barcelona being slightly superior.
