Thessaloniki used to be a pivotal Greek city since the antiquity, although during Byzantine and Ottoman times there was a great influx of Slavic populations moving there, thus making it a place Bulgarians wanted to own, also for strategic reasons. Our wars with then about then matter had concluded after Balkan War 2 and World War 1, with a small Bulgarian invasion during the Nazi Occupation of Thessaloniki during WW2 (The Kingdom of Bulgaria and the Reich were allies). To this point there was still a significant number of slavs there, also in the greater Greek Macedonia region

Afterwards, the Civil War happened Greek royalist forces, backed by Britain and the USA, clashed with the Greek partizan forces (Greek communist party, supported by Yugoslavia and some Bulgarians, boycotted by Stalin). The guerrillas lost and with them losing, 90% of the slavic populations left the region
