To be fair, compare the role of Belgium in WW1 to the Netherlands in WW2. The Belgians destroyed their infrastructure and held out like lions in sieges like Liège and Antwerp all to buy time for the French to prepare. While the Belgain government was in exile in Le Havre, Albert I remained in the trenches, the fucking trenches, with his own men to show that Belgium was indeed not a road and the King of the Belgians would not let his citizens (the King of the Belgians has no subjects, but citizens) fight alone while he still drew breath.

Now to the Netherlands. All it took for us to roll over is a single bombardment because people die in wars and we can't have that! And let's not forget our monarch, who left her subjects(!) behind and fled abroad without a second thought. Hell, the current royal line is only "technically" born in the Netherlands. Had the Netherlands actually fought, the French might've bought some precious time to organize a defense and millions of lives would've been spared in the long run. Had the monarch remained behind (or actually organized some sort of foreign resistance by rebasing the navy in Surinam or whatever), they would've actually saved face. But the cowards fled.

Look at Denmark. They rolled over in a single day, but the king nevertheless remained behind and, with risk for his own life, paraded around Copenhagen every day in full uniform to show that despite everything he was still the king and he was still there for his people. Because that's what a monarch does. If we really want to keep the monarchy around as a symbol, at least the symbol should act like a fucking symbol.

Loving one's country does not mean one cannot criticize it. In fact, criticism is an act of love and there is a lot to criticize about the Dutch performance in WW2. Our size is no excuse, as the Belgians had shown some decades earlier.

Soviets could if they invaded first.

They literally had more tanks the entire world combined. Paratroopers, planes, heavy tanks(4years before the germans), you name it.
Soviets were prepd to fight on someone elses territory, not on their own. They would crush Third Reich if they invaded in 1939/1940 first.
