My business trip to Spain went well. 99% of dialogues went like this.

>Hola
>s:Hola
>Habla inglés?
>s:No
Virtually nobody speaks English in Spain.

Information centre:
>Hola - Hello
>H-hola
>Do you speak English?
>Que? Aaah, English? No, no. Yo no hablo inglés.
For fuck sake they don't even speak English in some tourist information centres.

Nobody in restaurants, bars, American fast-foods or almost anywhere. Not young people. Not even students.

Only some people at the airport. They're not required to be able to speak English even on the airport!

One of four of our receptionists.

And many people that turned out to be former foreigners or tourists.

Then we met a young Spanish guy in one restaurant. He told us that usually they have ten or more years of mandatory English lessons in their school system. But nobody bothers to learn English.

Just for fun I also tried French and German. To no avail. Surprisingly.

I communicated in Spanish thanks to the translation service of Google only with some minor issues. But all that was a huge lesson about Spanish culture for me.

Spanish business partner couldn't keep to the terms. We promptly tried another one. And he failed too.

I couldn't understand how such a lazy shithole can live so comfortably and how it successfully pretends to be a First World country.

Good.

Why are you visiting another country and FORCING people to speak in YOUR own language instead of theirs?

If I go to Russia I won't expect russians to speak in spanish to me, if you go to spain you shouldn't expect spaniards to speak in english to you.

Learn spanish next time you travel to a spanish speaking country you inbred moron.

They probably speak a bit of english but are too insecure to follow up a conversation. This for the younger people but older people >40 years old, they just didn't study english in school, they simply didn't have a single hour in school of english, they studied french and their local language (catalan, basque or galician). Most kids in Spain today speak much better english than their parents.

I'm with Nigel on this one. It's sad that a country that is supposed to be first world, is in Europe, and is the second most visited country speaks very little English. You're all acting like English wasn't that big of a deal, but it is. Proof is that you're all reading this very same post on this language and you need it to communicate among yourselves. You certainly aren't using French nor Spanish, you are using English. English is the moder Latin, get with the times.

Not an argument.

I love Spain and love the Spanish language but there's absolutely nothing wrong with being able to speak the most important language in the world.

Spanish isn't going to be the language spoken here. Sadly because a big portion of the migrants here come from the lower classes of Mexico and Central America the Spanish language gets associated with them and is seen as an inferior language by society.

The reason why chicanos are so self hating is because their parents culture gets shamed as inferior. Spanish is the janitors language by default in the US. After one or two generations your average chicano will deny he or she understands the language and will surprisingly get upset if you were to associate them with such language.

Same shit in Russia. No one here speaks English too. The reason is only minor peoples learn English because they are too irrelevant and do not produce enough content themselves while too small an amount of English content is translated in their language. Anything popular is translated from English to Russian/Spanish so no one learns it. Also we produce enough memes ourselves.

>>
>>72055640
>torna a língua menos específica

>não é objetivamente mau

Não. É um dialeto de escravo. Escravo não tem escolha.
>>
>>72055777

Portuguese is very similar, since it's only used in the exact same contexts as Spanish (tiny bit in Europe, a huge bit in South America), but since we don't have as many people and it is a fair bit harder to learn, we always get trumped for not having our own niche, despite being the 5th or 6th most spoken language in the world. French is like the 18th and is still more talked because they have a huge presence in Europe.

On the other hand, there aren't as bad stereotypes of Portuguese as there are of Spanish, mostly because the US borders Mexico and not Brazil.

Fact 1: Half of the people here (specially the spaniards) are unemployed, uneducated, and underage who can't admit how important it is to learn a second foreign language. In the working world a foreign language is a must, and usually it has to be English.

Fact 2: Spain is a socialist rathole where people work the bare minimum to survive, and then spend the rest of their time complaining about why they are broke and why their government can't support their undereducated families, and whether or not loving their country is considred fascism.
They can't compete globally, and the only reason they stay afloat is thanks to their immigration and good connections with latin america, corruption, and of course tourism. In short, along with Italy, Greece, and some places in France, Spain's is Europe's Mexico.

Fact 3: All the people demanding the brit dude to learn spanish for a BUSINESS trip should just give up in life altogether. Your countries will be better off without your kind of youth. You do nothing but complain instead of improving your perspectives of finding employment. When I lived in the U.K all the spaniards where going crazy and falling in love with the british way of work as people actually fucking work.

Fact 4: Of course, Brazil had to butt into the discussion and fuck things up into oblivion. >>72050175

I cannot believe my fucking eyes in this thread. Are you guys fucking serious? I mean the Spaniard ones. I hate these unemployed fucks that start insulting in spanish when someone says something they do wrong. Like holy shit, people here don't seem to realize that makes it even worse.
As a spanish guy, I feel nothing but shame when i see people not being able to speak english. What a good country to live in, dont you think?

In fairness it's a bit insulting to hear Anglos telling you that you have to learn their language in your own country. There's a bunch of fat Americans here laughing at how Spanish is a "spic" language, I would be insulted too If I was in their position.

However for business, English is essential. I don't know how much OP is exaggerating but if you can't have a business meeting in English, then nothing is going to happen at all.
>>
>>72057837
But the french speak even worse english than the spaniards:
http://www.ef.edu/epi/

And Portugal wasn't conquered by napoleon and we speak the best English out of the Romance languages.

Napoleon's only worthy contribution to the world was canned tuna.
>>
>>72057917
But that's only because The Portuguese people are inherently superior to both.

Just because we understand one another that doesn't make you insta fluent in both. They are still very different.
But of course you wouldn't know I doubt you can speak any of them to have a valid opinion on this matter. Fuck off

Yes, but as much as I hate the Spaniards by nature and national duty, the Frogs are even worse. This is the one thing Iberians will always agree.
>>
>>72057574
They are similar, but they still have significant differences, especially when spoken. Hell, I've had some south american teachers (PeruANOs mostly, and one Argie) and they make some really simple mistakes, accentuation is a problemas we have different rules for those, and understanding them is a bit hard sometimes.

I remember this one time I could only reply "gracias" to this tourist who said something to me on the bus line, I couldn't really understand her for shit

>>

It's a fact that lots of people here can't speak other language than spanish. I'm pretty sure they can speak at least 3 languages in a tourism center though.
>In fairness it's a bit insulting to hear Anglos telling you that you have to learn their language in your own country.
Yeah, it would be insulting if these Spaniard faggots weren't crying like crazy and insulting back in spanish. I mean, they deserve being insulted if they act that way.

>>72058091
You're probably right, I just have sympathy because I know how arrogant some of my fellow Anglos can be on holiday. We were the victors when it came to globalization, and it made us a little entitled when it comes to language.

The whole rude French stereotype never happened to me in France because I made the effort to at least try to speak their language.

Back in the day French was the main foreign language in school so old people might have it harder

Haha you're talking to someone who barely understands Portuguese. I understood everything except "galego". It's very similar, but I have the most trouble understanding the language when it's spoken.
