Sadly letting them see the consequences won't work, the only way to counter it is to shame them and state that they are gluttons and all the terrible things about obesity. When I started college I drank only water and ate healthy options, avoided Burger King and Chick-Fil-A. I can't fathom getting fat off soft drink. I, too, am somewhat addicted to it, but I just drink coke zero and it doesn't affect my weight. In fact, it's helpful when I diet because I replace snacks with it and it keeps me fuller for longer.

There are sugar free, low calorie alternatives available for almost every soft drink and they barely taste any different, why the actual fuck would anyone buy the fattening version? Even if they're not great for you (something I haven't seen much solid proof of), they won't make you gain weight and you don't need to go cold turkey or exercise any willpower in just picking the black can instead of the red can. You'd have to be retarded to do anything else.
