Did Spanish colonizers actually care about their non-white wives/children or did they look down on them as subhuman/half-breed for their heritage?

Some married indians and had children with them. If they were rich they would try to marry their kid to other criollos or even the Spanish nobility. Cortés comes to mind. Others just treated indians as concubines and paid an small alimony if they ever had a child as they would do in Spain. The racial component in colonial society became more important later on but overall there wasn't much hate towards mestizos from their fathers

Cool. Do you know where I can read more about this?
Was Spain very Americaboo in the first few centuries?
>The racial component in colonial society became more important later on
Did it still affect relations in any way?
They were the 15th-century equivalent of Elliot Rodger babbies. It's probably a big reason why Spic America is such a shithole to this day

Spaniards are non-white themselves, so they saw the indians as equals and treated them much better than the British colonists.
Until the 18th or 19th century the catholic church refused to acknowledge amer-indians as human beings with souls

The Spanish crown recognized indians as subjects of Castille. In theory they were equal citizens to peasants in Spain

The caste system was created in the XVIII century and I think that criollos had some priviledges over the rest. That is why parents always tried to marry their daughters to a criollo/Spaniard as castizos (Mestizo+criollo) were considered legally criollos. But the caste system wasn't really that strong

Some colonial lords exploited them during the encomiendas. Then the crown created the repartimientos in which indians had to work for farms and mines for a period and then they were free for the rest of the year copying the Incan system. Also Jesuits created kind of socialistic societies in which lots of indians fleed. Paraguay was a huge reduction for example
