なってしまった → なっちゃった
しまう is used as an auxiliary verb. In this case the meaning is similar to as if you were to use adverbs like "regrettably", "unfortunately", and/or "accidentally" in English.

Thread died before I could respond to you anon. Oops.
>I want "kamaku" to be a 雷く verb.
Go to the Dictionary Tool or Add word (Dictionary Tool is the same thing but with an easier layout). In the Reading section, add かまく and in the Word section add 雷く. In the Part of Speech/Category section, select the verb class, so probably 動詞カ行五段 in this instance. Is there a box where you can type the Comment or some form of description? If so, type out your definition/meaning, I guess.

>I want "anonimosu" to be a 亜乃2燃素 common noun.
Same as above only select 名詞 from the Parts of Speech box.

>And I want "desutorakushon" to be an apocalyptic proper name "電嵐風噴爆破滅", in the style of Armaggedon or Ragnarok.
Same as above, only select 人名 or 固有名詞.

>Also I want "sakana" to output this |><>°ºO
Same above above, only select 句読点. Amusing choice, by the way.

>Also, if I want to say 電嵐風噴爆破滅的 later on, will it recognize the made-up compound if its base form was added in the library?
Should do, man. I'd also suggest using the Dictionary Tool option instead of the Add Word tool option, as it's just easier to use overall.

Next post will have a list of the Parts of Speech and their meaning.

>>
>>71865202
It's a fucking anecdote. Do you think things like that haven't occurred in hospitals in Australia? I have family who work in the nursing and public/private hospital systems. My mum worked with a lady who spent decades abusing the elderly in her care but instead of firing her, she was simply moved from place to place like the Catholic church deals with priests, all because she somehow managed to sue the nursing company and they were afraid she would go to court again. Multiple people have died under her direct mistreatment. Shit like that happens all over.
The larger the system, the more fall through the cracks.

Just to clarify, I am guessing 大好きな久助の気迫 means "the drive of my beloved Kyousuke", and that 久助の大好きな気迫 means "the drive of Kyousuke's that I love", but I am not sure if these are correct (especially since I think that the latter Japanese sentence would imply that that drive isn't beloved by the speaker, but by Kyousuke himself.

Would appreciate any input on >>71865394.

Okay, so 大好きな久助の気迫 is ambiguous between the two meanings.

If anyone knows, how would you rephrase the Japanese sentence to represent each of the two English sentences unambiguously, if there is a simple way?
>>
>>71865709
Maybe if you say 大好きな久助のその気迫, it could be more definitively interpreted as "the drive of my beloved Kyuusuke". Not sure how to achieve the second meaning, though.

I was going to ask what is the point of marking stuff as alphabet or particle, but I guess it's about making it so the program will recognize PoS and by doing that, compounds as well, right?

For instance, if I turn manko in a particle, ともだちまんこころす, the program will know it's 友達まんこ殺す instead of 万心す or something.

Yeah, you can, but when used like an adverb like that, it's more common to do it in the form of 何よりも.

何よりも高い
何よりも恐ろしい
etc.

>Like, can 何より強い人 mean "The strongest man of all"
In that case you'd use 誰よりも強い人.

Were you a person who asked about なに previously?
なにより of なによりうれしい and so on is one of collocations.
なにより can be used as both a noun and an adverb.

I think that's just how the brain works for most people. Remembering things is easy right away, but then right after try and explain what you think you remembered to someone who doesn't know and majority of people have a hard time.
It's just a matter of exposure and experience, like all things. Keep at it.

東野圭吾 - Good mysteries. Some great twists and thrillers.
百田尚樹 - Good plots and generally good story telling, though I can see why some people think he's overrated. Personally, I like him even if he is a bit racist and blunt sometimes outside of his novels.

My kokoro felt empty earlier until accidental coming across this webm while looking for a file. Now it is playing on loop and my heart hurts. A painful overpowering mix of the urge to become a father alongside wanting to hug a little longer than a parent would. Forgot how adorable this series is.

>I was going to ask what is the point of marking stuff as alphabet or particle, but I guess it's about making it so the program will recognize PoS and by doing that, compounds as well, right?
I guess. To be honest a lot of those entries seem a bit odd and were worded a little strangely. A fair amount of natives were having issues understanding just what the fuck a few of those category terms mean for the user and I found the answer to them by looking up answers provided for those similarly confused natives and by finding random blog entries explaining them. Also cross-referenced an online guide Apple has for their built-in Japanese IME which uses more common terms for these functions, with examples.
Still don't really know exactly what Google means with the 連休詞 selection.

There should be some sort of user manual with clear examples. If there is I'm completely blind because I couldn't find such. Then again, Google is known for obscuring how to actually use their products. The help forums for Google Docs is a complete clusterfuck of unanswered questions, handwaved issues and outdated answers which are no longer applicable. Still think the IME itself is the best one out, though.

I even mistakenly downloaded season 2 because I thought the scenes would be from there, so I'll end up watching it too not to waste it.

I've typed 60 pages out of ~160 so far, I struggle more with timing the pressing of spacebar to convert words properly than anything.

Basically a bunch of kanji turbonerds arguing whether 旧字体 was really written by hand in the past as opposed to abbreviations more similar to current 常用漢字. (tl;dr both happened)

If you studied 旧字体 (and 旧仮名遣い) for shits n giggles before, you'll probably enjoy this.

I would change "Eeeeh?!" to "What?!" or "Huh?!" since those are more natural ways to convey surprise in English.

And then in the second to last panel, instead of "Mizuki-san's words...They lit up my heart like the sun." I would go with "What Mizuki said...really lit up my heart [like the sun]."

These are just personal tweaks that I would make, but I think that they convey the same feelings and information while sounding much more like proper English. Also we don't use -san in English, so I don't see why it's being used in translation.

Other than that, looks pretty nice. Good job
>>
>>71886535
The translation is fine, but the lines are rather stiff.
>You're incredible, Lillie! I really admire you.
>Y... You're praising me more than I deserve.
These, for instance.

Think like a little girl, dude!
>>
>>71887199
Don't listen to this guy "Eeeh?!" sounds way better than "What?! and "Huh?!"
>>
>>71887357
This. It carries a different nuance, and your target audience are likely to know the difference.
>>
>>71887199
One of the character's defining traits is putting "-san" on people's names. So it'd feel strange leaving it out.

>>71887342
Lillie is a very formal person, like "desuwa!" status, so I think that sounds fine for her. But, what do you think would sound better than "You're incredible, Lillie! I really admire you."? Maybe "you're amazing" or something.

I might as well ask even though I know there is no real answer.
But how would you guys handle "がんばリーリエ"?
I went with "Lilliest", which is more or less just me copying Love Live. There is a character in Love Live named Ruby and she say "がんばるび", which was officially translated as "Rubyest".
>>
>>71887732

>>
>>71887732

>>
>>71887872
Yes, I know. But it's a portmanteau, so you TL should be some kind of mixed word as well.
>>
>>71887732
TL note is the only way.

As many TL notes are possible
>>
>>71887542
Yeah, in general you'd try shortening things to make a good flow. Saying it out loud helps
For instance, instead of "The cat brought the marijuana directly to the woman", which would be a very clear translation, a person in real life would say "it gave it right to her!".

Of course, the context should be clear, and you have to factor things like the desuwa ladyspeak and avoid making kool readin' sentences like "Mr. meowmeow here just smuggled the stash straight to the boss lady!".
Pardon the hyperbole. That generally happens when people try to translate more casual speech or expressions with no equivalent in English (rubbadubba).
>>
>>71888029
it means 頑張れ私.
「リーリエがんばっ」 also is OK.
Actually I can't decide that is not a portmanteau.
Though, if she uses a portmanteau in this situation, I think she is a little strange.
it is a subjective issue.

Need help! How do you eat rice with chopsticks?
I can eat the meat and veggies just fine
>>
>>71889952
Usually you don't eat shitty rice that isn't sticky. Otherwise, just scoop it up in quick succession with the plate in front of your mouth.
>>
>>71889952
Is that jasmine rice? Japanese rice tends to stick together well, making it fairly easy to eat with chopsticks. Jasmine on the other hand is quite パラパラ.
>>
>>71889823
thank you for explaining to me.

Sticky rice is the worst. Even worse because they make it vinegary. Even American-tier rice (pure grains, maybe salt, no seasoning) is more palatable.

God, how I hate Japanese food.
>>
>>71889952
The rice that Japanese people usually eat has more Gluten in it, which makes it stick together in clumps. You really can't just eat any type of rice with chop sticks.

Says who?
>>
>>71891208
Uh, says common sense?
You translate non-portmanteau words as non-portmanteau words, right?
>>
>>71891523
Translation should sound as natural as possible while retaining the original meaning. It doesn't matter what phrases, words, or idioms are used so long as that goal is accomplished. Sometimes a translation calls for a particular word, sometimes it doesn't.

Not all words and phrases have direct translations either, and I'm sure everyone here knows that. As long as you get the right point across and accurately, you can make slight adjustments. Translations are for the reader's accurate understanding, not yours.

your level is too different from others.
though, if I don't reply immediate answer, the wrong answer would be posted.
therefore I reply in first impression.
perhaps I think other people can't think about a possibility that it is a portmanteau.
therefore the point in an argument is changed.

I think Japanese who explains to foreigners is wrong.
the adverb of the start of sentence is important, but there are few Japanese people who tell about it.
Japanese people talk only about a special property of itadakimasu, but they don't think that is not often used by only single person who has a meal.
The anime shows the girl is polite because she says a greeting alone.
no one tells such a thing.

If a song (or the act of singing a song) is described as 渋い, which of these meanings is correct?

The context is I was explaining to a grill that I sang an 演歌 song in karaoke and she replied with 渋い (among more things).

What mean?

きっとこいつ英語力低いんだろうな。。
例えば俺は日本語は、とてつもなくバラバラでも補完できる自信がある。
余裕を持って知ってるものは応用が効く。暗号文でも大丈夫。

英語も日本語も少し乱れてるだけで読めなくなるのは、きっと英語や日本語が苦手だからだろう。
それは自分のせい。

Fug, I need to brush up on my Spanish.

Anyway, there's a BR here that is doing the reverse course on Duolingo. That is, English for Japanese speakers. No idea how effective it is compared to what an actual Japanese for English speakers course would be, but you could maybe give it a shot. You'll obviously have to supply it with a grammar resource like Tae Kim or Genki though.

Reminder that if you want to get fluent you should be listening as much as possible instead of wasting time reading.
>>
>>71909357
I can't. I look at people who learned English through listening trying to write and I get suicidal feelings.

Of course it can be remedied later, but so can speaking/listening. It's just people don't generally bother when going this route because they feel like they know enough.
