You can get a very nice education at a public school, but it's a roll of the dice. The best teachers end up at the same schools since they pay more, and affluent people move out to those schools so all the wealth builds up in certain areas (like northern Virginia) while the other schools get worse. I had a teacher who taught in rural Georgia, and he said it's still mostly segregated by region and he was too busy stopping fights in the bathroom to eat during lunch.

Also, all the good universities are getting much more difficult to enter. In the past few years, the acceptance rate for the best STEM school in the South (GA Tech) has gone from 50% to less than 33%.

Most students I know eat ramen noodles and are poor because they are lazy and can't or don't want to cook, drink every weekend, go to restaurants every day, stay in residence and buy stupid shit like clothes and tattoos with their OSAP. I ate fairly normally in college because I knew how to shop and how to cook, rented a cheap room off campus, only drank what others bought, worked only part time and ended up in very little debt (I went to a trade school though I don't see why it couldn't be done at a university).

The American system is unique in which the base tuition is high and changes when you cross state lines but there are thousands of scholarships out there that can cover the tuition but most people don't bother to look myself included. I'm pretty lucky only having to pay 3k a year in tuition for my first four years and then paying a full rate for my fifth but if i win the competition for thus semester I get like 6k.

We do want to overhaul it but, since we are federated states, most want education handled locally so we don't drag everyone down to negro gangster level to make it seem like they aren't retarded. I also want the government to stop giving out student loans, then the price of tuition would drop and fewer people would be able to get a degree, thus increasing the value of college education. The gop has a plan for healthcare which should be much cheaper than Obamacare.

Why? We want education handled locally, federally funded college is not local and would drive the value of a degree down as it's more available. There are also adverse effects of having degree holding become the norm, people need several more years of schooling to find a good job, so they hold off on marriage and kids or just abandon the idea, I don't think it's sustainable.

Reading this thread and feeling fucking bad because there are literally people here in Brazil thinking that fully privatizing our universities and our health care will bring the heaven to Brazil. People literally say: "the best universities of the world are from USA and they are paid! If we privatize USP it would literally be Harvard!". They also argue that the universities would be cheaper for the poor, because of muh free market.

It's not like life here is easy with >free good universities and health care system but i'm pretty sure that would be even harder with paid universities and health care.
