Is there a ban on big commercial signs in Europe because they seem almost non-existent, or is it because all the buildings are old and can't be modified? Even so, you could put banners above shop windows. I know they have them on the ground level but they're little tiny things on the doors and windows. Why not massive signs like these?

Yes, in Norway there are very strict rules about what kind of advertisement and signs you can put up. I am very happy for this, but I don't know the rules fully.
