Any of you guys ever stay in a hostel when travelling in Europe? Planning a holiday with my friends and we're thinking of staying in a hostel, but none of us have been and don't know what to expect. What are they like?
General Hostel/Travelling Thread
Use sites like hostelworld to book them. Check rating, location and the comments from people. Try to get a room with a bathroom in it.
I don't know if you want to know something specific about them.

What are friends?
Enjoy your newly developed hatred of Australians.
I'm doing something similar in 2 months, but across Ireland/London
Some have a standard "Shoes off at the entrance" policy so keep that in mind.

>hostel
what's your purpose?
to save money? to meet people? if it's the former, then just get airbnb, you're travelling in a group so it will work out very cheap per head, more comfort, less in-your-face
when i used to do hostels, it was mainly for economical reasons, there wasn't airbnb back then
meeting people in hostels, unlike those typical stories online, i had very little experience with this
you get out at 9, only comeback at 1 pissed drunk, you sleep like a log until 7, you queue up for toilet and shower, rinse repeat
you see, barely anytime for "hello you alright what are you doing wanna tag along"
i had better luck making friends in pubs than hostels

Both - Airbnb is way too pricey for our budget, so we're opting for hostels. We figured we'd meet people as well - kill two birds with one stone.
Do you seriously not meet people at all in hostels? Call me optimistic but I was hoping to meet other travellers who were chill guys, maybe share a drink, get high or just hook up

if you and your friends get your own room it's great. if you get put with randoms it's a dice roll
