Anyone here from Kazakhstan? My father was born there as a German and I try to get an idea of how life was/is there. He is from Merki/Mepкi and it seems like many Russian-Germans went there during WW2 to escape from evil Russians.

I try it with Google Translate or ask a friend later.
My great-granpa was in one of those KZ btw. They let him go after about a decade when he asked the guards to either shoot him or let him go. Even gave him money so he can travel back to his family

my mother's friend was marriend with a KZ german and they later moved to garmany but it was a while ago
im also a distant "relative" of wolga germans, about 1/8 german Xd but they weren't from KZ, and there probably too old for gulags, at least i don't know it
also they changed their surname to more russified variant so its probably saved them as well, since commies weren't really smart with documents etc
