they weren't really colonized (except kinda after ww2) and unlike in china for example japanese society didn't look down on merchantry and business

also maybe another factor is that after being destroyed they had to rebuilt from scratch and thus go the highest standard. in germany for example after ww2 the allies dismantled all the factories and industry and took it for themselves, so germany just built completely new state of the art industry tfrom scratch that was superior to what the allies had taken.
