What's up with these two nations? You'd think that with half a continent's worth of resources they'd be world powers by now. Wasn't Argentina wealthy once?
As I understand it, Argentina had (has?) An aristocracy that kind of ruined things. They were rich in the 19th century. Take this with a hefty grain of salt though because I'm not certain
Brazil is just a mess, and always has been
Corruption
>>71265596
>Wasn't Argentina wealthy once?
no, that's a meme.
and we're not industrialized, we rely on agriculture, that's it basically.
everything else is pretty much first world, so with a little help of our neoliberal government we'll end up being pretty powerful heheheh
>>71265737
It literally isn't though. Before the great depression you were one of the richest countries in the world

>Before the great depression you were one of the richest countries in the world
no, GDP per capita means nothing when theres a shitload of inequality, look at the arab countries.
socialism helped a lot with bringing equality and whatnot, but now that our quality of life and such are pretty much top notch, we need to get industrialized, otherwise our economy will always be eastern europe tier.
so long as they don't touch the universal healthcare and high quality free universities, we'll be great.
>>71265859
How can you not be industrialized yet if you have free education?

>>71265970
socialism, every company was discouraged to come here since we kept fucking them up in every sense possible, even to the point of stealing the whole company from their owners (YPF).
now that we have a neoliberal government after like 100 years of socialism, we should start to become industrialized.
>>71265859
It isn't a meme is what I meant

Argentina was supposed to be Canada or Australia tier by now. They could be shitposting right here right now on a higher level without being called niggers every time.
Argentina got fucked over by the British after WWII who decided to stop imports from Argentina so the whole agriculture broke together
Then the Americans installed a little nice military junta but not one of the smart kind
Then they got fucked over again by the British when they wanted to retake the Malvinas
Then in the early 2000s the desperate masses wanted socialism and Americans again fucked over Argentina cutting them off from the international money market
Argentina quite literally never did anything wrong.
Memes aside, Argentina and Russia are the proof that being a majority white country does not guarantee development if you are not a closeally with the hegemonic western powers.

First, we made a deal with U.K. and colonies, Roca-Runciman, in 1933. We would continue selling beef, but cheaper, and most packaging would be done abroad.
6 successful coups in the 20th century, all of them changing policies and then changing them again, making us a risk for investors.
When the last dictatorship opened up for foreign investment, the people who invested did it short term, just to get a quick safe buck.
The masses have wanted socialism since the 60s.
Nestor Kirchner (2003-2007) took a populist stance against the USA.
Investing in our country is risky, we are known as a dangerous investment because some guy will come along, take over the government and kick investors out, or change policy so that it makes it harder on investors.

Wealth does not mean much for a country when huge percentage of it is in hands of few and it is not used, unless that 1%/dictator/etc. happens to be a good leader(s).
Worst case scenario is like North Korea where there is wealth but it literally is in hands of few that spend it in what ever frivolous shit they ever want, while people resort in eating grass or rats at worst.
Look at Libya, literal non-country in before 1960s(?) that then did a great leap when Gaddafi and his arab socialism came in and wealth was redistributed and overall quality of life got better.
That is not to say socialism is only way to redistribute wealth I am not saying that. Whether its tax cuts/reductions/deductions, welfare, good economic policies etc. is a completely different topic.

Why do you think so?
We might be vastly rich by then (after all, we are already the 8th economy of the world), but with our current political leadership and cultural situation, we will still be a country with great inequality, with a still deeply religious and fanatic population and low levels of culture and education. We will be a country with money, but only on isolated islands. A rich country, yet still poor in mind and spirit.
People in power now don’t care about education or about reducing extreme poverty and making the State help those that are in the lowest-of-the-low positions. Our current government only talks about “economy” and “economic crises” and “to make the country grow again” (that and to avoid being targeted by the police and the judicial system for their past crimes).
They want ready-made solutions, not the long-term slow but effective strategies. They want to simply cut costs, but always cutting the investments that are made on the people (while at the same time favoring big corporations, like the pardoning of the debts of great telephony companies). They seem to be unable to realize that the surest way to really make the country rich and powerful is to invest on its core, that is, its people; to invest in the next generations, to make them mentally and physically healthy and valuable.
We live in a country who is always willing to flatter military and religious leaders, to flatter great business owners, while at the same time treating professors, students, factory-workers, rural-workers and Indians like low-priority citizens. We live in a country were few families are the owners of the press and construct the public opinion as they please.
I would love to witness a great revolution in Brazil, but presently we are walking backwards.

Lel, South America is shit because Swedish truck manufacturers lobbied for railroads to go to shit.
>Dog bless Scania and Volvo
>>71275183
those railroads went to shit because we don't need them anymore.
>>71275246
Because of superior Swedish trucks? Maybe, but it's still bad.

I mean I've seen some Scania and Volvo sure, but pretty much every truck is either IVECO or Mercedes Benz, so I don't really know what to tell you

Hmm, I was thinking more of Brazil, got it mixed up, sorry. I read an article some time ago about the infrastructure, I think it was in the 60s/70s.
>>71275183
It was actually Americans lobbying for trucks and roads back in the 30s. You need to at least know a little bit of our history to be able to talk about it.
To this day Swede vehicles are nowhere to be seen

Once we free ourselves from the shackles of socialism and the constant subversion of the United States we will rise.
Because while people in the cities of Argentina was wealthy, and immigrants from Europe were doing well, deep in the rural areas of northern Argentina there was a big menace that would not explode until the late 20th century.
It was the peasants, dirty and poor, most of them mixed with Amerindians. They were poor and uneducated but nobody noticed them since they lived in the countryside and they were a small minority. But after the lands they had were bought by big companies in order to make space for soybeans and other commodities, they started migrating to the cities. And they brought poverty, crime and ignorance with them. Also, they have much higher birth rates than normal people, so they are not a small minority anymore.
And since the 1990s we are also receiving immigrants from poor neighboring countries, but most of them only go to Buenos Aires anyways, so it's no problem for the rest of the country.

>Once we free ourselves from the shackles of socialism
You do realize that there was never a socialist State in Brazil, right?
Also, to call a govern that works to implement a more extensive and resourceful Welfare State while maintaining a democratic form of government a “socialist” State is mere propaganda.
Is funny that we see in history again and again that the more the State invested in its own people the more the country develop. Today the great examples of North and Europe are all countries with a very substantial Welfare program, and still: there are those who think that starting to work toward such goals is to try to make the country some kind of North Korea. That is either: a) naivety and ignorance or b) bad-faith and propaganda.
>>71276273
>and the constant subversion of the United States we will rise.
Good luck with that. You people were all making pressure to take down Dilma. Now we are with the worst kind of cowards and weaklings in power, almost bitch-like flattering the great conglomerates and the US.
>>71268756
Ok, so after going though all of these and checking the new data, we still lead the way. Maybe not by a longshot but this is still the most developed country of the western third world.

>>71276858
Dilma was absolutely incompetent and the current government has the same agenda, even tho the brainless left act like they are right wing and opposition. It's her fucking vice, for christ's sake.
Brazil has been completely indoctrinated by socialist ideals. It's on our schools, it's on our news, it's on our media. A socialist coup was never put in place, but we are still being subverted.
>>71276858
what is going behind this odebretch thing?
I mean if the US is making a big fuss about that is because they want to take down something or someone.

Aposto que você é um daqueles que acha que o Poder Moderador era usado sempre como um verdadeiro absolutismo, que a população adorou o fim da monarquia, que ele tinha uma religião oficial, etc.

>Dilma was absolutely incompetent
maybe, but it was your incompetent. Now you have an incompetent put by the US.
btw all those things are "estatal" almost everywhere
>>71277059

How is the vice president of the largest leftist party was put there by the US?
Everything he has done so far was Dilma's plans, including the high school reform.
And she sure as fuck wasn't "my incompetent". Socialists never have the well being of the people in mind.
>>71277190

Argentine natural resources are a meme
Argentines and foreigners overrate them. Argentines like the tale of "we have everything in this rich land, but xxxxx"
2 thirds of Argentina are a desert, steppe with bushes style
we dont have Iron, and we import both gas and oil.
One third of Argentina is quite fertile, and we do have a very developed agricultural sector.
But I dont think we are more rich in resources than a place like the UK, which has a lot of iron, coal, northern sea oil, and pretty good land too.
we also do very very little mining.
>>71277629
And one of the most corrupt and only now all his money detouring is catching up to him. Lucky him to not be during mandate, so people can act like it never happened and he's still a great president, huh.
Peron and the ditatorship fucked up with Argentina.
Brazil was fucked up for populists too, but its sheer size and population make it grow steadly during the second half of the XX Century, despite an astonish inflation.
>>71277877
That's true too. We have very fertile land near the main rivers but that's it. India has the most fertile land in the world and it's a shithole.

Do you really think that if he was that corrupt he was going to be still free and clean? All the powerfull people in Brasil want his head: the media, the rich land owners, the old political families, the military, many great names on the judicial system, and yet they cant find something to frame him in spite of all their hate. Lula is the Santo Graal of those people, and yet they hardly find any scrap of all his huge "corruption empire".
