Japanese culture is unique in its combination of the Old and the New, the Occidental and the Oriental. Think about the Meiji restoration, perhaps the most interesting period in Japanese history. Within a single lifetime Japan went from a feudal, isolated realm of Samurai and Shogun to a modern, highly centralized nation-state of modern armies, effective railway systems and factories that blacken the sky. In Japan there was also the question how much the Westerner was allowed to define them (especially considering Matthew Perry forced Japan's borders open) but in the end they resolved the question that for example the Chinese would struggle with for yet another century. They copied a lot of the West, but always maintained their Eastern heart. This is why they have a lot of respect for the powers that helped them westernize (America, Britain, France, Germany) but at the same time always maintained a strong sense of what makes them Japanese and not yet another colonized people.

And let's not forget that the Japanese aren't the only ones to copy the Eiffel Tower. There's three in America (including the most awesome one in Paris, Texas) and Britain tried to build three, demolished two because they sucked and now only have the Blackpool tower. And then there's the entire fake-Paris in China. Really, the Tokyo Tower is probably the most original of all the copies. I think there's also this area of Tokyo where a lot of artists used to live which was called the "Montmartre of Japan" but I can't remember what part of Tokyo that was.
