I prefer the state making freedom for its citizens rather than being free from the state. Going tens of thousands of dollars into dept to get an education isn't freedom. Going tens of thousands of dollars into dept because you get sick isn't freedom. Having a safety net that people can rely on is something I value. Freedom for the rich isn't freedom and everybody don't have the means to get a good work or wealthy parents so that they can get a good insurance or getting a good education without going broke. The freedom not to think of debt is something many many Americans can't afford. People growing up in bad socioeconomic circumstances simply aren't given the equal right and opportunity. This also creates a huge inequality.

I happily pay my taxes knowing that everybody are able to get the education they strive for, the healthcare they need for and a general safety net for all the citizen. It's far from perfect and could be much better but it's still much better than the american model of only caring about yourself and not your fellow men. Giving money to charities that take most of the money for profit and clap yourself on the back isn't even close to a good solution.

I'm not going to say that the US haven't done a lot of good. Because the US has and it's very noticeable in how the world has developed but the problems the US has caused as well are enormous. It has acted in its own and its allies interest firstly. Which doesn't apply all that much since getting people on the right path is a big part of the public sector here. People don't just get money and there it's done. People get less and less money the longer they are out of work. Getting people back in the work force is something that our system heavily relies on and isn't even close to perfect by any means but it does work to a pretty large extent.

And if you want some life experience I can just say that even though I grew up in a pretty bad socioeconomic layer I was able to get a great education in industrial economy that would have cost me tens of thousands for dollars if not because of our system. I have also had the luck to travel to many countries, included the US and I have seen how much bigger the problems you got are compared to here. 2 month of visit isn't something you can base the knowledge of a country's system on though but simply reading statistics about quality of life, equality etc I can get a bigger picture of how it looks and countries like the Nordics countries end up on the top for a reason while the US is a bit farther down even though you have the same, if not biggercapabilites to pull it off.

Following that line usually the low pay in certain fields is made up for the fact that companies pay higher taxes so someone is still paying into the system but it's not the workers as much.
