The region has lost a lot of its population ever since the copper mines shut down decades ago, so many of the locals (including descendants of Finnish immigrants) left the Keweenaw peninsula ("Copper country") for work elsewhere. Most of those people were melted in to Americas melting pot.

But the families that remained up there and never moved out, even though the big employer disappeared (mining), are largely still intact and tightly hold onto their roots.
