So, why do we call ourselves "Eesti" in Estonian? The word is a 17th century loanword from German that only became popular among Estonians in the 19th century. We called ourselves "maarahvas" - lit. "landfolk" before, which I think is a much better name. "Estonia" as in the land was "maavald" - "land parish". The Estonian language was "maakeel" - "land tongue/language"
