Guns serve multiple purposes. Both scenarios are equally unlikely to happen in Finland, but it's a good idea to prepare for them nontheless. I've got a child-size .22 varmint rifle passed down from my grandfather, a civil war era revolver from his father (although that's not in condition to fire at this point), a 9mm Beretta, a .308 my dad used to go deer hunting with, and a 12 gauge for duck. I'm thinking about getting a moist nugget for the memes.

Haven't had a chance to shoot anything but the 9mm in years, though. Closest rifle range is an hour and a half's drive away and pretty pricey, and I'm not much into hunting.

That's more of a side benefit then anything else. The main goal is to protect your hearing, since wearing earplugs isn't practical outside a range. That's one of the reasons used to restrict their sale, though, since gun control types hope that if shooting is painful to your ears you won't want to use a gun.

The original application of a silencer was to make shooting without earpro less of a pain. The military application of suppression is to indeed make the shooter harder to locate.

Civillian applications of suppressors are limited, since if you aren't shooting subsonics you'll need earpro anyway, and they make the rifles longer, heavier and a bitch to clean. The only situation where I'd ever use a suppressor is if I was shooting at my summer cottage and the neighbours came to complain about the noise.
