Well, actually it's because America in Chinese 美国, pronounced "meiguo"."Mei" is supposed to mimic "Me" of aMErica. (And 国, guo, is country/kingdom.)
Other examples:
France: 法国, faguo. Fa mimics "france", and has connotations of lawfulness, orderliness.
Germany: 德国, deguo. De mimics "Deutsch" (of Deutschland), and means virtue, righteousness.
Netherlands/Holland: 荷兰, helan. Helan sounds vaguely like Holland, 荷 means lotus, 兰 means orchid.
