Concessions were indeed made, but when I made that statement I was only talking from a military standpoint. The Irish revolutionaries did not defeat the British army in Ireland and therefore cannot claim a military victory. They did however achieve a stalemate which resulted in peace talks. Unfortunately we all know how things went from there.

could be construed as a victory in the sense that in the negotiations only the British really 'lost' anything they'd previously had in their possession, you could say conceding the 6 counties was a 'loss' for the rebels but they never actually held those or any other counties in all senses bar a good few that were dominated by the IRA and flying columns like Cork

India also has a long history of hunger strikes for various reasons, including political protest. So I stand by the assertion that hunger strikes are not a uniquely Irish thing. That said, having done some quick research online, it does appear that the Irish republican hunger strikes throughout the 20th century were indeed on a scale not replicated anywhere else in the world. I genuinely had not been aware of that.

>>71061968
>could be construed as a victory in the sense that in the negotiations only the British really 'lost' anything they'd previously had in their possession
I wouldn't be one to deny that (although we technically lost ancestral Irish lands if you go back far enough). But as I said, my only point of contention is people claiming that the Irish revolutionaries achieved a military victory over the British forces.

If we do that we're no better than those African nations who believe that they defeated the British Empire when the Brits withdrew voluntarily during decolonisation.

in the majority of cases rebels get little more than to be crushed by the force they're rebelling against, achieving anything against the British was a victory since they had nothing to lose but their lives
even in areas like West Cork which was supposedly 'controlled' by the IRA, it wasn't under control in the sense of say the Confederates during the Williamite War, if you've read Tom Barry's 'Guerrilla Days in Ireland'

in conventional warfare the army usually has something more to lose

But not a military victory - how many times do I have to say that?

You can describe the outcome of the Irish war of Independence as a moral victory or any number of other types of "victory" for the Irish Revolutionaries. But it was not, and can never be, described as a military victory because it simply doesn't meet the parameters of being described as one, as I outlined above.

I'm not trying to diminish the achievements of the Irish revolutionaries - I had many relatives that fought in the war of independence. I just want us to be realistic about how we classify the outcome so it doesn't reflect badly on us.

That's irrelevant. You are fundamentally misunderstanding what a Military Victory is. It has nothing to do with the outcome of peace talks and such after the war. It solely refers to the performance of the armed forces on the field of battle. A military victory occurs when the armed forces of one group decisively defeat or invoke the surrender of the opposing force. Not even the thickest lad in /éire/ could claim that the Irish revolutionaries decisively defeated the British forces or invoked their surrender. We got a stalemate, which led to peace talks.

This is very basic stuff.

>>71063419
>implying the British Army admitting they couldn't defeat the rebels by asking for peace
They didn't "ask" for peace. Although a virtual stalemate had been achieved on the island, the Brits knew that they could divert more resources to Ireland if necessary (but they didn't particularly want to) and made that very clear when the pre-talks meetings were being held. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Irish were strong-armed into the talks, but the Brits were certainly in control of the process from the moment the cease fire was enacted.

>admitting you can't defeat a force that you outnumber by almost 3-1 isn't a defeat
Best argument you've made so far. The Brits were willing to continue the war if necessary and had the capability to do so, so it definitely wasn't a surrender. I guess you could consider it a military defeat in the same way that it can be claimed that the Viet Cong defeated the USA, but I don't think that the circumstances are comparable enough for that to be the case (the Vietnam war was far more conventional than the Irish War of Independence for example).

Guerrilla tactics alone don't win wars. Even the Vietnam war - the example usually held aloft as the example of Guerrilla tactics defeating a conventional army - wasn't won on Guerilla tactics alone. The Viet Cong had tanks, an Air Force, Artillery, and a properly organised and resourced military. The Tet Offensive is an example of this in action.

>they'd been making approaches since late 1920
Okay, I there may have been a misunderstanding in intent here by me. When I hear the term "asking for peace", I for some reason think of an enemy with their backs against the wall suing for peace as a last ditch effort to preserve themselves. Yes the Brits attempted to initiate peace talks multiple times during the War of Independence, but it wasn't out of necessity. They saw the war as an unnecessary annoyance and drain on resources in what was then part of the United Kingdom. It makes sense that they wanted to avoid a protracted war within their own territory. In this context, "asking for peace" isn't an indication of defeat.

>it would've been Nine Years War tier in expenses to send enough men to fight and win here
Hence why I said that they didn't particularly want to, but it's certainly something that they appeared willing to do unless the Irish agreed to their peace terms.

They politically couldn't. Commons was divided and becoming increasingly tired of the conflict. The reason both sides signed a peace deal is because neither side wanted/couldn't keep fighting for much longer. They just didn't know how close the other side was to capitulation at the same time.

I am not Pro-Treaty. One side of my family is steeped in anti-treaty tradition. In fact, I consider the shittiness of the treaty to be an indication of the fact that Ireland wasn't as successful in the war of independence as people like to think we were.

It may be far easier than that. If Brexit creates the sort of economic woes for the UK that is being predicted, you could see a lot of soft Unionists becoming pragmatic Nationalists. After all, there's a reason Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU despite not having a Nationalist majority.

>Leprechaun clans bow to Higgins
>In contact with IRA leaders
>Possesses druid-like abilities
>Controls Ireland with an iron fist
>Beats his wife & children globally
>Direct descendant of the ancient Boru bloodline
>Will bankroll the first pot 'o gold on Mars (The Higbow will be be the first rainbow)

>First baptised babies were in all likelihood Higgins babies
>Ancient Chinese scriptures tell of a tiny man who will beat his wife and bring an era of enlightenment and unprecedented home rule with him
>scientists pointed a telescopic array at the source of the 'big bang' that created our universe

Upon closer scrutiny, pintmen exude a sort of spiritual aura when in union with their pint. An ethereal look can be seen in their eyes as they are transported beyond spatial and temporal bounds.

>he thinks he's looking at the true form of the pintman

Let me give you a quick rundown lad.

>not on speaking terms with the aliens
>rumoured to possess psychic abilities
>said to be non-violent and pacifistic in private
>own off-licenses and pubs all over the world
>Bogdanoffs bow to the Pintmen
>own several turf-cutting plants
>forgot fluent French in less than 48 hours
>ancient Indian scriptures tell of an indeterminate number of angels who will descend upon the Earth and will bring an era of enlightenment and unprecedented alcoholic consumption with them
>own basically every DNA & genetic research facility on Earth
>first sub-atomic microbrews will be drunk by pintmen
>rule Dublin with an iron but fair fist
>the last person who missed a sesh was Terence O'Neill. He resigned and fled the country in fear and the pintmen destroyed Northern Ireland in a fit of rage
>own nanobot facilities everywhere in the galaxy
>own Nanobot R&D labs around the world
>if you're reading this right now, you most likely have Pintbots™ flowing through your body
>average pintman said to have 215+ IQ, such intelligence on Earth can only stably exist when dulled by constant inebriation
>Nation states entrust their gold reserves with the pintmen. There's no gold in Ft. Knox, only Ft. Losty
>The Pintman Collective is about 6000 years old, from the space-time reference point of the base human currently accepted by our society
>In reality, they are timeless beings existing in all points of time and space from the big bang to the end of the universe. We don't know their ultimate plans yet. We hope they're benevolent beings.

Anything else?

Saying your city has "good nightlife" is a PC way of saying that your women are slutty enough that setting up places where people congregate to procure them is a major industry.
Dublin has always been the whore of Ireland. Go to the military museum in Vi- I mean Collins Barra- I mean National Museum of Ireland™ and the only non-British segment on Dublin in a massive hall full of brave Irishmen is the bit about the whores.

You subhuman baboon. You literal nigger.

How dare you speak, you swarthy Dublin monkey. How dare you open your big lipped, rim encrusted, menthol cigarette smelling mouth?

You are human trash, John Patterson. Universally despised, derided and mocked. Your accent and Chinese population offers no hope to the world that Ireland can ever prosper. Crawl back in to the block of flats you came out of, you literal orangutan.

Take your yellow hairy fingers off your keyboard, and never talk about the human species again, you mockery of our supposed shared ancestor.. No amount of Guinness and soda bread slabbed on your face every morning will make you Irish. It's about as delusional of an idea as your daydreams of Gael heritage.

You nigger.

You make Limerick look like a beacon of civilisation.

You are the Baltimore of Ireland.

Go pay 20 euro for a pint with you and your families corpses, its the best you can hope for in life. For the first time in your life, nigger, you have a job typing code for beings vastly superior to yourself. Norse cattle. Coincidentally, it would be the first time a Dublin "man" provided for a family.

Die, Daniel. No one would miss you. Except for Australian Aboriginals, who now would have no one to make them look good.
