What exactly is wrong with a smaller population? Japan is still a very populous country even if they lost a few million people.

There is a certain point when population size stops having a real impact on the country's economic power. It's becomes more about how you use your population rather than it's size.

Smaller isn't the issue so much as shrinking is. Low expected population growth makes it very difficult to sustain high levels of investment and decreases inflation, leading to low investment and lower expected inflation and even less investment in a vicious circle. It's a major cause of Japan's poor economic growth since 1990. That's totally ignoring the increased burden of pensions and healthcare on a smaller working age population, difficulty growing GDP faster than already existing debt

Okay, and what do you suggest happens when the population geta unsustainably high? Genocide? A pandemic? Everyone is talking about how bad it is that a population decreases, but nobody talks about when it gets too high, which some argue is already happening.

It seems more humane to just decrease the birth rate than have a huge chunk of thw population killed. I don't see people as disposable items.
