Mandarin isn't necessarily more useful than Japanese. It can very well be, in fact in most cases it probably is at least a bit, but there are still many cases depending on your sector and type of business and/or your career where Japanese is more useful. Don't forget that Japan still has one of the biggest GDPs in the world, and and a fuckton of exports, and unlike China it's a wealthy, developed and civilized society where people are pro-western.

i've never understood learning a language for "business". the amount of time you have to invest to get to a level where your passive skills (listening/reading) are good enough to be useful for that purpose is extremely high, and even more if you want to actively use it. with such foreign cultures, you need to live in the country where the language is actually spoken as well, to fully master it for active usage.

while it's true that usually, the better you get the more interesting and fun it gets, if you don't have personal interest in the language, it will be hard to keep up. it doesn't have to be more advanced than "i like it". wanting to race mix after seeing prostitutes is probably not long-lasting a feeling enough though.
