WOAH, just read 60 pages of Yotsuba+ without getting stuck, checked the dictionary only once. Last time I attempted (2 years ago) it took me a good amount of hours and I had to check the vocabulary/sentence tables all the time.

Hanahira doesn't have easy grammar, it has no grammar! It's a trainwreck of sentence fragments and abbreviated slang. Try reading something that has complete sentences instead. Like NHK News Easy.

Disclaimer: I haven't read Hanahira. I'm basing my evaluation on screenshots of the game and conjecture.
>>
>>70970715
Grammar seems to be my biggest issue, yeah. Vocab is something you can always look up but more complex sentences are lost on me.

I've tried a bit of NHK News Easy and shounen manga with furigana and found them more to my liking. I just want to get to a level where I'm not so frequently lost.

To be honest, kanji are tough, but memorizing the most common radicals really helped me. It's not knowing that the 氵 in 湧 means "water" that helps me - desu, I've forgotten a lot of the explicit meanings - it's being able to split up the character into recognizable components 氵, マ, 田, and 力.

What it doesn't help at all with is kanji with eight dozen readings like 上 and 下. I haven't found a memorization aid for that besides brute force.

Remember the Kanji, book one, is good for getting used to kanji components. It can be done alongside whatever else you are doing.
It is kind of polarising in that some anons love it while some anons hate it.

昨日、友達とバスで学校に行きました。・Yesterday, I went to school with the bus with my friend. Or I went to school with my friend with/using the bus.

Temporal nouns like 昨日 and 明日 are best used in this way and don't usually need particles.

As for the rest, just (sub-clause)(particle).

昨日、yesterday・友達と friend with・バスで bus using・学校に school to・行きました。went.

Simple.
>>
>>70973208
you can use a bunch of different methods to get audio from your pc to a receiver, HDMI, RCA to 3.5mm jack and toslink(optical)
however optical has a conversion stage from digital to light then back
on top of the dolby digital compression conversion, the time adds up to a nasty startup delay
PCM is uncompressed therefore its only the optical delay

im probably wrong on the details, but PCM works, i don't know your particular speaker setup, just sharing a similar problem that i was having

/djt/ i did something very bad.

because of reasons, i had to stop anki for a few days and came back to see 400 cards waiting for me from the 6k core deck

i tried over 3 days to do the cards while still being able to sleep between my job and college, but couldn't get it down below 300.

so this morning i just hit 'hard' on all them just to get the count back to a manageable 0 so i can 'start over again'

how fucked am i

That shouldn't be the case. Which IME are you using, Microsoft's or Google's? The former is dogshit and you should get Google's if you already don't have it.
>>

I'm using Google's. When I typed kyuu it wasn't coming up.

Also I have a problem with Google's IME, I have to reinstall it every time I turn off my laptop, is this normal? Otherwise it doesn't appear in the toolbar at the bottom of my screen.

Not at all. What OS are you on? Also you don't have to activate it from the toolbar every time, you can bind it to hotkeys.

Note that all DACs introduce a small amount of delay (usually less than milliseconds) because you have to oversample the audio before reproduction to prevent audible aliasing, and oversampling = resampling = you either need taps on both sides of the sample you're generating or you're using an IIR filter that has positive group delay.

A problem I have with VNs is that so many of them are erotic in nature and it doesn't exactly appeal to me. I know that there are many great non erotic VNs but from my understanding they are rather more suited to advanced or upper intermediate learners.
Maybe after another few hundred volumes I'll branch out visual novels.
>>
>>70982662
If you've read several hundred volumes already you'll probably as ready as you'll ever get reading manga. Nothing will get you to an advanced stage faster than reading advanced material anyway. Just pick something up. You don't have to spend all your time reading it.
>>
>>70982756
>If you've read several hundred volumes already
That was pretty ambiguous. I've only read about 60 or 70 volumes, from memory. Read/played a few VNs in English ages ago but could never really sink into the format. Maybe it will be different in Japanese.
Still want to finish off my manga reading list first, which is a couple hundred volumes worth.
I know it's a bit lame to rely on recs and ratings but Steins;Gate is rated the highest on vndb for no sexual content, so I might try that out first. The anime was pretty good but I only watched about half way through, so it isn't exactly spoiled.

If you're already covering other areas of study, any marginal gain you can add by doing little stuff like this is welcome.

Wow, that's quite a lot! Most of it is SoL though, I suppose you're quite fluent with that genre at this point? Wouldn't it also make sense to read some other output?

How much do you read a day and for how long have you been studying? I'm a beginner myself and I'd really like to see some benchmarks for purposes of orientation.

Reading yotsuba here and having a hard time understanding this sentence:

でもフッカ今出かけてていないわよ

I remember 出かける from the 2k anki deck to mean going out. So the negative form should mean that fukka is at home (ーていない - not in the state of going out). But the context clearly states that she's not at home. Also why is the verb written with two て's?

>I suppose you're quite fluent with that genre at this point?
Oh christ no. SoL is an incredibly deceptive "genre" in that different series often has a lot of more specialised vocabulary and especially with 四コマ、where the most self contained nature of each set can introduce entirely different and once off words.
スケッチブック throws a lot of insect related words, among other things while ひだまりスケッチ has a lot of art related words, among other things, etc. etc. etc.
Fun, though. ゆゆ式 is an example of a series that has a pretty large amount of vocab used which are used incredibly sparingly, as the pivot point of the series is how the main characters indulge in random things.
Would recommend pretty much all of them.

Oh, I see, that does make a lot of sense. It's probably quite a banal realization but it really is stunning at times to see how things can really nasty from one page to the next one when characters suddenly start spewing isekai infodumps in manga or something of the sorts. Specialized vocabulary can be quite a hassle, I've had some in-depth food experience with that sort of thing, it was nightmarish. Also barely pops up elsewhere so it's harder to remember.

Also, how much do you read a day and for how long have you been studying?

This is the image from ゆゆ式 I was looking for before. It's an example of randomness, this time in an extra-linguistic sense, of a reference which is only really thrown about as a once off. There are many little things like this which may require a little bit of extra research if you don't really have any background knowledge of Japan and certain cultural events to really get the nature of the joke.
Pic related is simply enough, just makes me laugh and doesn't really need surrounding pages to be posted to get the full context.
With a lot of different SoL series it isn't uncommon to also come across various place name type references, which of course are instantly understood by the audience but learners without much understanding or experience of Japan, the place, might be a little lost.

>how much do you read a day
A few hours, I guess? Kind of hard to tell. On a good day it could be three or four volumes of something relatively sparse, like よつばと! or ふらいんぐうぃっち、that sort of thing, before starting to hit a mental wall.
>how long have you been studying?
Two or so years on and off, almost entirely off. Only really started to get back into reading more routinely a little before last December.

In the 24 odd months prior to that for example I had only read the first 12 volumes of よつばと!. Really regret not getting into regular reading ages ago.

>It's not. The い has been abbreviated
Thanks for clarifying.
>>
>>70984602
The い of ている is abbreviated in spoken Japanese in a casual setting to the point that you'll almost start to thing that it is the standard "proper" way to speak. When you see てて or something like 飲んでる、走ってる if you get into the habit of mentally placing the い in there it may help when reading dialogue with a bunch of conjugated, linked sentences.
Others which are common is the てお of ておく、in something like 買っておく being abbreviated to 買っとく。
The 思う of ~と思う being abbreviated to simply と at the end of sentence. The context makes it relatively obvious.
The いけない of ないといけない being dropped entirely in favour of simple ないと. Once again, context makes it clear.
There are a bunch of other abbreviations like this you'll come across and eventually get a feel for understanding while reading/listening.

Thanks for elaborating further. The only familiar abbreviation in your post is the いけない part. Seems like practice alone is the key to learning all of these casual patterns.

The Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series goes over a lot of these abbreviations. The Basic volumes entries for いる (2), おく, なければならない, しまう, etc. Tae Kim's guide probably has these as well.
If you're good are memorising stuff, these sort of abbreviations could probably be plugged into an Anki deck where you go from "standard" to the abbreviated version, then cards the opposite direction.
Reading has mostly made me aware of these things but to be honest I doubt it has helped at all with production. That said, I haven't really read much so maybe reading a bunch of books would amp up those skills for the ability to both recognise them and effectively use them.
I guess the main focus of these threads is consumption more than production.

What's the difference between しごとはなんですか and どこにつとめていますか?
>>
>>70986237
The difference between
>what is your job
and
>where do you work
The first is a more direct question about the job whereas the second, being a question about the place, is less direct. Slight difference in focus.
>>
>>70986340

Need to remember that in English 'Where do you work' is synonymous with 'What do you do'. In Japanese it is not.

どこで働いてますか? Is literally WHERE do you work.

あなとのしごとは? Works even better, its like 'Your job? (is)'

>>70986237

つとめています is making an effort.

どこにつとめていますか? Is 'where do you make an effort'/where do you make an effort for society.

Difference is one is an expression/idiom, the other isn't.

There is a pdf version of his site in the CoR but it might be a bit outdated.

It depends what you regard as "grammar". Almost all of the grammar points covered by Tae Kim which aren't in jtmw are really just set phrases which would be picked up by rikaisama as single words anyway. There are so many set phrases like this in Japanese, it would probably be better to learn them as you go along rather than studying them independently. So long as you have the fundamentals and a brief taste of how the language is styled you should be all right.

Sometimes it's very difficult. Did you know the Japanese 'sh' sound (voiceless alveolo-palatal sibilant, IPA ɕ) is different from the one English has (voiceless palato-alveolar sibilant, IPA ʃ) as well? It's really hard for me to tell the difference, but I know more or less how to move my tongue to make the Japanese sound.

Anyway, if you get these wrong, the differences add up, and you'll have an unmistakable accent that, depending on what your mistakes are, might be hard to interpret. (although the 'sh' would rarely get in the way of understanding compared to ん)

It sounds really inflammatory. Someone yelling doom and gloom without even providing any evidence besides what is more likely a freak medical incident.

It's true, H5N8 has had a pretty bad outbreak among poultry farms in Japan, but the key things to keep in mind are that H5N8 is in general less dangerous than H1N1, and that it's really difficult to transmit from chickens to humans.

The first people who would drop dead from something like this are the factory workers. Not pop star idols. And often when humans do contract the disease, it's still either no more contagious than it was with the chickens originally, or still difficult to transmit.

Ah, I see what you mean, the tendency is forming vowels and hums using the entirety of the mouth, but with this n sound, it's more pronounced at the back of the mouth, due this throath blocking thing.

The Japanese have a saying: 七転び八起き 「ななころびやおき」 "Fall down 7 times, get up 8"

Don't be afraid to make mistakes! The worst you'll do is fall over, but you can always pick yourself back up. Beginners often start learning the language full of fire and determination, but quickly fizzle out due to fear of making mistakes. Look forward to making mistakes and learning from them instead. Even if climbing just a few steps feels painful, difficult, slow going and unsatisfying in the beginning, if you always stick it out, every day it becomes easier, and you definitely will achieve your goals!

Can anyone help a beginner get a better grasp on Kanji?

From what I understand, there's two ways to read most of them, the original Chinese way, and the Japanese "adaption", and when pronounced they can sound completely different.

So does most every Kanji technically have multiple meanings (Chinese and Japanese), or is it just different ways of pronouncing them? Like, do I have to recognize every Kanji for it's multiple meanings or am I just trying to learn the proper pronunciation or what?

Sorry for the dumb question, trying to wrap my head around this.
>>
>>71007879
Italian is a super popular foreign language studied around where I live.
In fact I had to study it for 6 years in primary school.
And Japanese came as a result because in the 1980s and 1990s, Indonesian was a popular language to learn in Australia, but they slowly phased it out in favor of Japanese.
Now I presume they're going to start introducing Mandarin (I really wish I learned that from a child)
>>
>>71007834
>either Japanese or Italian

>>
>>71007985
Some of what you said was right.

Many kanji do indeed have multiple ways of pronouncing it. Certain pronunciations of the kanji will be obvious through the context once you learn the words.
I suppose kanji can have multiple meanings, I haven't got my textbook with me right now, but a very lazy example would be 日. This can mean either "day" or "sun". And then when added to other kanji, it can make entirely new words.
日本 = Japan (lit. Sun origin)
Other examples aren't so mind-boggling but rather useful
毎日 = everyday

Now, let's take the examples of "Japan" and "everyday"

In "Japan" 日 is pronounced "ni", whereas in "everyday" the pronunciation is "nichi".
This is just one quick example
any questions? I'm happy to help
>>

To be fair, it's quite logical.
The top 5 most spoken languages in Australia aside from English are:
1. Mandarin
2. Italian
3. Arabic
4. Cantonese
5. Greek

As for Japanese, it's because they're a pretty good trading partner with Australia, that being said, I still think Mandarin should be compulsory in all schools across Australia

I guess the thing I'm having trouble understanding is how to remember the differences in pronunciation, I recently started using Anki and I'm already having trouble with the first numbers.

But with "tsu" attached it becomes 三つ = "mitsu", with 三 being pronounced as "み" when referring to buying "three things"

Is this something I'll just have to memorize and interpret when I see 三 pop up in a sentence? Again sorry if this is a really stupid question.

I'm a beginner as well, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but...

I don't think you're supposed to learn the kanji in isolation.

Instead, you're supposed to learn the words themselves, and the pronunciation/meaning of the kanji used in those words.
>>
>>71009365
>Again sorry if this is a really stupid question.
There are no silly questions in language learning, especially in a language as complex as Japanese.

Now, I started learning Japanese in high school, so the way I learned kanji was entirely contextual. I learned kanji almost as an auxillary part to the actual language.
What that means is, I literally have no idea what the onyomi (chinese reading) and the kunyomi (japanese reading) are for each kanji, I never learned it that way.

So through how I learned it, it becomes very obvious by context

"私の弟は三歳です。"
"わたし の おとうと は さん さい です。"
"My little brother is 3 years old"

I just know by context that mitsu is never used for someone's age.

So unfortunately, I don't really have an easy answer for you. I guess context, no matter which method you learn the kanji, play a massive role.

Why give up? They'll only buy us out and rule us if we let them. Just vote in a racist Chinese-hating politician and put bans on their shit, and get Trump to nuke them.
>>
>>71009617
I've spoken to many people who have learned the kanji in isolation, I was kinda shocked, because I think that's a terrible approach and overwhelms a beginner with a shitload of information they kinda don't need at the start.
But I'm surprised how many people adopt this approach

When I first started learning Japanese, we used kana almost exclusively and slowly added more and more kanji into our sentences from there
>>
>>71005682
that is much better than the post of Pblahblah who can't write over three lines of sentences.

You CANNOT learn Japanese
>>
>>71009617
>>71009675
What's helped me (as a beginner) is learning based on kun/on readings when the kanji readings are simple (only two or three total) since you can sometimes predict which reading to use. I memorize the rest (kanji with lots of readings) "manually", without regard to their word origins, based on learning the words instead.

>>71009813
Whenever I get text with words uncommonly written kana I get confused on how to split the words... But I don't know enough kanji to actually read without looking stuff up. I guess I just need more time with the core 10k

Very cool. I read, somewhere on wiki I think it was, that people thought that 神 and 上(かみ) had a shared etymology before they discovered that the vowel actually differed for み
>>
>>71007985
Kanji don't have meanings, words have meanings. Sometimes a single kanji can spell a word, sometimes it can represent a particular aspect of a word's meaning, but it never has any intrinsic meaning of it's own, only what is indicated by the context.

Really? I've never seen that, but I'll take your word for it.

the lyrics in the song, connect them with that perspective and you'll see how i interpret the song. please listen and you might understand my mindset.

basically, i live in a reality where the world and my entire life is conspiring to make me move to japan. my parents wanted me to stay in my home country so that's why god killed them last year, because fate is removing all obstacles from my path one by one

of course thats not true. its just coincidence, but its the mental state i adopt, and thats how i listen to music, which is why those music motivates me a lot more than they would motivate a different person

you can now call me the most autistic person on 4chan but it really works for me

We've been dating for 4 years now.
It's not an issue of visa. I could go back home (I'm a citizen of both nations) and she could come with me and gain citizenship as soon as I marry her.
However the bigger issue is that it's a small non-relevant country with a Spain/Greek-tier economy. Add in the fact that she can't speak the language, she would be stuck in permanent unemployment. So unless I manage to score an amazing job there, there's almost no way we could live comfortably.

>do you love her?

Whether or not you've realised it (from what you've written, I think you have realised it), the journey is almost more important than the goal.

I wonder if this is a type of collective cohesive.

What is "normal" is simply a social norm that is generic enough that everyone in the country could adhere to it, but you're never expected to actually believe the "normal" or "social norm", rather it's just a guideline to interact safely with another person while taking minimal risk

One fascinating thing about our culture is that the "social norm" in the west is geared highly towards Diaetic exchanges (that is, communication that lacks real substance), and asian countries practice a social norm geared towards Interpersonal exchanges (that is, communications that focus on developing honest relationships)

I couldn't tell you which social norm is the right one, but what I find is that the problem in western culture where people have these insane perceptions on life couldn't really exist in asian cultures because the asian social norm does a good job about restricting the ways you can think.

>I don't have much information about Muslims
Trust me, you don't want them in Japan.
They will destroy Japan.
>I really can't think that if the person...I really can't think that if the person
Yeah, I agree. I don't think he'll be happy if he moves there. It's hard for us to know. Maybe yes, maybe no.
>Because Japan isn't a paradise and people are cruel to ''different people''.
I 100% agree with this. My older brother used to work in Japan (Not an English teacher), and he said it was hard working for a japanese company, because even though he speaks the language fluently, he said he always felt like an "outsider". He said he felt like his superiors at the company would treat him like he's just another lazy westerner that doesn't have superior Japanese work ethic.

>communications that focus on developing honest relationships
It's funny. This is paradoxical.
I think on one level, you're right. Japanese don't do the "small talk" that we do. They don't feel the need to fill in the silence by asking how the weather is and how your son is finding his new school. However, to say they're "honest" is a big step.
I think Japanese people are much more happy to lie, provided it's a white lie to cover a painful or uncomfortable truth.
Here in Australia, I feel like people are incredibly upfront and wouldn't understand the Japanese culture of saving face

>Japanese company
Very true. And Japanese company are harsh to Japanese as well. Moreover, even Japanese employees need time to get company's trust, really need patience.
>outsider
I think this happens in all country, but in Japan, it happens good way and bad way both.
Always gaijin are kinda special.

If it makes you feel better anon, I like to think I'm living in some kind of simulated MMO where the RNG adds up make certain intentional events happen due to the butterfly effect. And when we die, we wake up and remember everything. I know it's not true, but it's fun to think about. I imagine it occupies that spot in our brains that spirituality usually fills itself into.

I actually might be autistic though, but I've taken that for granted at this point. It has its upsides.
