Had they marched their 5-6000 troops and burned Dublin to the ground, they'd have struck at the very heart of the English. Firstly is the promotion and building of more Gaelscoils. Gaelscoils currently make up 7% which is a pity when you consider they are in high demand and many countries have successfully used these type of schools to teach their native tongue. Look at the Basque region in Spain, which currently has 200,000 people speaking the basque language even though the language was banned throughout Franco's dictatorship (1940-1975). They revived their language by investing in Basque speaking schools which were extremely popular and has lead to the language returning from the brink of extinction. Wales has over a fifth of its education speaking in Welsh only and the language has thrived in a historically pro Union country

Another thing that would go a long way to reviving the language is changing young people's attitude to it. Irish is a tedious language to learn and shouldn't be made even more difficult for people to learn by making read boring poems to write useless sentences in a exam. Schools should focus on teaching how to speak Irish to the point of fluency and should be made a non exam subject. I think that Irish needs to be linked back with Irish Heritage and we should be teaching people not only how to speak Irish but also about the great Irish people who spoke it too and why they say it is important.
