In German, we either say "Amerikaner" or "US-Amerikaner".
To refer to the country itself, we either say "USA", "Amerika", "Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika", or "Vereinigte Staaten".

I personally use the words "Amerikaner", "USA" and "Amerika".

1. you know how some countries' capital is called the same as the name of the country?
example:
country - Guatemala
capital city / county - Guatemala
so we've learned that a region can have the same name as the larger landmass it occupies
2. look at mexico, the official name is "the united states of mexico". why? because it is a union of states which occupies the region of "Mexico"

so from this information we can infer that "the united states of america" is a union of states which occupies the region of "america", which happens to exist on the continent of (also) "america".
