My town was created by hayduk bandis after their war band kept raiding Ottoman caravans, so the Ottoman nobles bribed them with a piece of land in order to stop the raids. It was named after their warlord, Kalifer.

that's grasping because it used to be a non-permanent fishing village for nearly a century and a half, people only started staying in it year-round in the early 1600s, and it didn't even become a city until some time in the 1800s.

oldest european settlement in the americas, sure, but there were a few european settlements being classified as cities in the 1600s.

Buenos Aires was founded twice.

1536 (abandoned and destroyed by its own citizens) in 1541, those years were terrible, as in, people having to eat their shoes and constant attacks from cannibal natives.

and again in 1580

the big difference is the local natives, who were hunter gatherers and cannibals, died in between those decades because of european diseases, and more cities were founded in the north in direction to Paraguay, so Buenos Aires could get some help from the north in case of a native attack.

they were founded in the same place btw, a couple of km away at most

On July 28, 1896, Miami was officially incorporated as a city with a population of just over 300.[5]

Miami prospered during the 1920s, but weakened when the real-estate bubble burst in 1925, which was shortly followed by the 1926 Miami Hurricane and the Great Depression in the 1930s. When World War II began, Miami played an important role in the battle against German submarines due to its location on the southern coast of Florida. The war helped to increase Miami's population to almost half a million. After Fidel Castro rose to power in 1959, many Cubans emigrated to Miami, further increasing the population. In the 1980s and 1990s, various crises struck South Florida, among them the Arthur McDuffie beating and the subsequent riot, drug wars, Hurricane Andrew, and the Elián González affair. Despite these, Miami remains a major international, financial, and cultural center.

The first settlement at what would later become Vancouver was called 'Gastown'

This settlement started as a crossroads and a single saloon, whose owner/proprietor Jack Deighton was known as "Gassy Jack".

He was not particularly flatulent. "Gassy" in the parlance of the times meant that he loved to talk, and was a gifted conversationalist who loved to chat with anyone who stopped in for a drink.

It is simple, there was no other option than to drain the lakes because there was always floods, this was mainly caused by the loss of labor to maintain the levees because of indigenous deaths due to epidemics. The lake was salt water, And floods caused many deaths, while rendering farmland unusable, so the city had to be desiccated, for the sake of survival and efficiency. In today's eyes it is seen as a crime, but at that time what was done was the only solution.

Detroit, big fire in the 1800's destroyed the city completely
Only american city to be occupied by a foreign power, lol

one of the world's largest salt mine is under detroit, its (one of) the reasons the city cant have a subway system
pic related, its what is a couple hundred feet under mainstreet (and Ford hg, and tigers stadium, windsor bridge, ectera ectera)

also fun fact: more people cross the us-canada border in detroit/windsor daily than along the rest of the canadian border combined

Sudbury, (Northern) Ontario, Canada.

>largest city in Northern Ontario (165 000 pop.)
>second tallest structure in the country (Inco Superstack; 380m | 1 250ft)
>Sudbury Basin, the second largest know impact crater on Earth
>mineral training ground for NASA astronauts during the Apollo missions

Besides those, there's not really anything of note. We have some of the highest rates of smoking, drinking, drug use, and obesity in Ontario (and, I think, the country). We've also been ranked the happiest city a few times, so...you know.
