I lived in Japan for a year as an ALT. I've been studying Japanese on and off for 10 years. Since having lived there, I travel to Japan every year for a month (not including buddhist/shinto pilgrimages which take a little bit longer).

All in all, boots on the ground I have only spent about 2 years in Japan.

I was thinking paper and brush instead.

I had another idea though, 'cutting' the kanji with a sword in the air and using aftereffects to add the strokes. I'm part of a sect that practices onmyodo or folk magic and part of our practice is kuji-kiri or 'cutting' the 9 seals. We sometimes 'cut' kanji in the air with our hands for mantras, sutras and poems for our practice.

It is said that samurai learned the proper stroke order of kanji from the strokes of a sword. It certainly helped me with my stroke order to think of it as sword cuts because of gravity and the flow the cuts need to go in.

I might make a test video to show what I mean.

Going to be uploading series like this maybe a few times a week in an ongoing fashion. Mostly cute series which both catch my eye and don't have an up to date source to download from, so others can enjoy it as well.
Was thinking, due to the speed that it may be useful if a thread on 八ちゃんの/a/ was made and all the links to series, with pictures, was dumped into that and act as an archive. They would be posted here in these threads then "backed up" in the other thread, as it may never get bumped off their glacial pace catalogue.
The CoR is great and all but having a large catalogue of series can easily overshadow things and what I'm tending to post is of a similar sort of taste, perhaps.

Thoughts? Worth dumping all the links, retroactively, present and future into somewhere other raw manga readers of similar tastes? Does the other DJT thread on /jp/ care for manga or does it receive the sort of anti-/a/ scorn /jp/ is known for?

ひと is used for the word 人. The other two are readings for compound words (on/kun readings I forget which is which)

So, I've done the Basic Grammar section of Tae Kim front to back, and am confused about what's able to modify what in sentences.

So far, he's shown us that, barring a few restrictions, most semantic parts of speech (nouns, na/i adjectives, verbs) can modify nouns and verbs next to them if you conjugate them properly. He mentions this himself here http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/clause , actually.

So, I know that Japanese grammar is "looser" than English in how sentences are constructed, but is there a formal system here? So far in this section, he's been showing me more and more ways words can be simply concatenated as modifiers.

I'm starting to have trouble figuring out when it isn't acceptable, and what the structure of it is when it does happen.

Mining is so much harder than drilling with core6k.

Anyone else not really progress with anki? I was doing one of the core decks, a dobj deck, and my own mining deck, and it was just too much for me to process completely. My vocabularly got way bigger but I still couldn't use these words properly in a sentence or even understand how they used in a sentence that I read. There was this huge disconnect.


Typing all that out now I realize that I was using Anki poorly. Instead of doing everything at once I'm gonna hold off on my mining and core decks and just read the entire Dictionary of Basic Japanese in order to get a better grasp of all the grammar. Then do the DOBJ deck after for review.

Listening is fucking hard. Even if I know 100% of the vocab of what's being said, I still have to process it in my mind for at least 10-20 seconds or so depending on the sentence.

So I decided to stick to the basic stuff like audio lessons from genki 1 until I can understand it %100 with my eyes close before progressing to harder listening material. While reading grammar books and building my vocabulary more. I found that increasing my vocab helped with listening too. It gets really hard when I'm watching an anime and they say the name of some fictional europeon place so it's hard to decipher what the fuck they're saying.

Since I'm cheap I've been using the deck anki myself. Though I'm only a beginner and only at level 5 so I can't really vouch for it but here's how i've been using the deck.

The deck is split in Lessons from 1 to 50 and in Radical, Kanji and vocab.

Set the new cards on 0 in anki and only study new cards by doing "custom study" options "Study cards by state or tag" -> "New card only" and select your lesson.

Do radicals first, then kanji and then vocab. It's up to you quickly you do your new lessons.
When you review make sure all the cards are mixed by using the parent deck.

For the kanji you only need to remember 1 reading (look in the mnemonics to see which), you'll learn the other readings through the vocab.


I used to be a "Learn the kanji through reading/vocab" kinda guy, but I felt like it wasn't working to well for me.

So I switched to this a little over a week ago and I do feel this method is a lot better. The kanji will help you acquire new vocab and the vocab helps you remember the kanji. It's a feedback loop.

There's an anki deck. You can also try it for free up to some level and see what it does for you.
Imo it doesn't really help you in the long to have all the mnemonics and connections spoonfed to you. I think it can demote your ability to come up with your own. And that's a powerful tool to have sharp.
I haven't tried it so i'm mostly talking out of my ass here tho.
I've heard that in higher levels you forget some of the kanji little stories and you have to go back, otherwise you can't follow their connection with the new kanji. That wouldn't happen if you did your own mnemonics, or at least i don' think it would.
Also, there are way too many free resources to be paying for it.

I don't know what anki you have but mine is at 2.0.36. New update is 2.0.41. It's mostly obscure error fixes if you see the changelog. I usually update only when at least the middle digit has increased.

I'm not a Japanese teacher (but a native), but I would say that when you want to put it temporary, you use 'noseru', and when you want to put it permanently, you use 'oku'.
The both, noseru and oku are interchangeable for most case, but in some cases, you can't. For example, the each sentence, '犬を車に載せて、公園に行く' and '犬を車に置いて、公園に行く' has the difference meaning, as you see.

漠然とした説明・ばくずえんとしたせつめい・a vague explanation

社長は淡々とした口調で話しました。・しゃちょうはたんたんとしたくちょうではなしました・The company president spoke in a cool tone.

広々とした寝室 is made up of 広々・ひろびろ・spacious and 寝室・シンシツ・bedroom, connected by とした, which we discussed yesterday. 広 is simplified from 廣・コウ which shows 黃・コウ・yellow and 广 the dotted cliff. The original meaning of the kanji is a 廣 wide and spacious field dotted with 黃 yellow flowers with a 广 mountain or cliff in the background. It now uses 厶 and 广 cliff, although 厶 is used as 'private' - bent arm, in this sense it is used as breath or a place under a 广 cliff where you can 厶 breath freely. 寝室・シンシツ・bedroom is made up of 寝・シン・sleep and 室・シツ・room. 寝 is simplified from 寢 which shows a 宀 roof/building, 爿 half a tree trunk and a phonetic remnant of 㑴 which means to raid/encroach. In its modern form is is easier to think of it as 彐 laying down 又 again under a 宀 roof on a bed made of 丬 tree trunks. 室 is phono-semantic compound of 宀 roof and 至 an arrow in the ground, which means to reach (a mark). You 至 reach a 室 room at the end of every day. Together 寝室 means the 室 room where you 寝 sleep, or 寝室 bedroom.

金 is made up of 王 upside down axe, 呂 splitting blocks of metal and 集 (亼) collecting them. Initially referring to copper, but coming to mean many other metals.

When you get to kanji like 針 needle it makes sense because its a 金 metal 十 pin shaped object. But if you remembered it as money - well it won't really work.

I have Core 2K/6K optimized installed. How do I format the back template to display the furigana atop the {{Vocabulary-Kanji}} field as a means to supersede the {{Vocabulary-Kana}} field? Please refer to my picture.

Also, is it possible to use the cursor to hover over {{Vocabulary-Kanji}} on the back template to display a pop-up window of the KanjiStrokeOrders add-on, which I currently have written below the definition, reading, sentence (not displayed in my picture.)

It seems like a function that turns [this] into furigana.

Oh, but this won't automatically add it, just make a compatible field...

You're better off making the katakana version appearing before the kanji one and pretend it's furigana.

I did try that, but i unfortunately did not work. I believe the Core 2k/6 Optimized deck implements the "Japanese Support" add-on, which can only generate the following directives:

Show the kana above the kanji: {{furigana:Reading}}

Show only the kanji: {{kanji:Reading}}

Show only the kana: {{kana:Reading}}

...
The issue is that the "Japanese Support" add-on generates those directives from the various "Sentence" fields in the Core deck... The Core deck does include a "Vocabulary-Furigana" field... I'm sure there is a solution to my question with respect to "Vocabulary-Furigana"...
