The point is that moving to Japan is hard. It's not something you can do in a week. It requires YEARS of effort just to meet the pre-requisites.

How much do you learn on a daily basis?
I've been doing Core10k for 13 months, and after I reached the 6k milestone (10 months) I started being able to read relatively comfortably.
I haven't even started to mine yet.

But I can tell you gaining vocabulary in closely-related languages is faster, because you're able to read something and deduce their meanings based on cognates or similar greek/roman/latin/germanic roots in your own language, or from another one you already speak, for instance.

With Japanese that skill will only really start to be useful after you've known at least all joyo kanji, but pronunciation will still depend on dictionaries.

2 years is plenty of time, learning 20 words a day you'd have no trouble, from where I stand now.

Japanese is modular and less position dependent than English. In English, words need to be placed in certain positions in a sentence to make sense, however English does have clauses like Japanese. A clause is a unit of grammar that contains at least a subject and a verb.

Let's take a previous example of a fairly complex English sentence, "Japanese is modular and less position dependent than English."

This sentence is already a simplified version of: "Japanese is a modular language and is less position dependent than English."

Because English is an explicit language, subject, object and verb need to be present. Here is the Japanese equivalent in an explicit form.

日本語はモジュラー言語であり、英語よりも位置依存性が低くなります。

For this example:
日本語・にほんご・Japanese language
モジュラー・mojuraa・modular
言語・げんご・language
英語・えいご・English language
位置依存性・いちいぞんせい・position dependency
低い・ひくい・lower
であり・like desu/da except implying a stop or pause - conjuction
よりも・works like the English 'than' (This is bigger THAN that) / in comparison to

Now this sentence has two independent clauses that are linked by conjunctions (であり and 'and'). We could more simply say: "Japanese is a modular Language. It is less position dependent than English." This is even simpler in Japanese.

日本語はモジュラー言語です。それは英語より位置依存性が低い。

Simpler and more elegant.

In English, if you say "English position modular than less Japanese dependent and is" it will make no sense because the clauses and the grammar are mixed up. The conjunction makes the sentence more complex, but also makes it more difficult to understand when clauses get mixed up.

In Japanese however, this is still understandable:

英語よりもであり低くなります日本語はモジュラー言語位置依存性が。

A Japanese person will get a much better sense of what is being said compared to the English equivalent. However this:

英語であり低くい日本語モジュラー言語位置依存性。

Is not. Once you scrap the particles, conjunctions and conjugation all you have is a mess - like in English.

The point of this example is to remember not focus on particles and not worry so much about sentence order for more complex sentences. As long as your clauses are sound and your conjunctions are in the right place, you will be able to say some quite complex things. As opposed to English, where small mistakes in positioning can ruin the meaning of a sentence.

Coming back to the example sentence:

(彼は)He subject(私たちに)us target(親切に)kindly adverbification(してくれました。)did (something) for me. Four parts, which create a clause.

彼女はとても綺麗になりました。・かのじょはとてもきれいになりました。・She became very beautiful.

彼女は・she subject とても綺麗に・very beautifully なりました。・became.

In this example the proper English is 'became beautiful', but the the Japanese is more accurately translated as 'She grew into her beauty very beautifully'.

I don't often use 低い so I'm not sure of the nuance. I know its the antonym of 高い, I just wasn't sure if it would work the sense of "the level of proper positioning is 'lower' here than there".

I was thinking of using 小さい, but I'm not sure sometimes of the translation from English to Japanese for 'lower' vs 'less'. For example, in English "the positional dependence is less than English" and "the positional dependence is lower than English" are both valid.

I'm not sure if:

位置依存性は英語よりも小さい and 位置依存性は英語より低い mean the same thing, because if you translate it to English it does.

To be honest most people just use the kana these days. That is probably why it was set to easy/hard, たぶん is a common easy word, but the kanji is uncommonly used.

Has anyone else read すみっこの空さん before? Started reading it yesterday and read the first volume and a couple of chapters of the second volume. Pretty damn interesting. It's a fantasy series in a similar sense to how 四畳半神話大系 (Tatami Galaxy) is.
It has furigana but wouldn't recommend it to beginner-beginners. A lot of the narration is written in, well, written Japanese style and the way the concepts of the narrative flow into the lives of the characters can be a little more "heady" than something straight up like a comedy series or the like.

Wasn't able to find rips of volumes 7 and 8 online so ended up ripping them from 楽天。If you're looking for something to read that's a little contemplative and playful, give it a read. You won't regret it. The below is the full series.

I live in the west coast so the time difference is 17 hours. With daylight savings time, its even more inconvenient. Before i used to be able to wake up at 5-6am and it would be 9-10pm in japan which is a great time to get some conversation practice in. Now, i have to wake up at 4-5am.

I'm still a beginner but I can highly recommend to suck it up and just learn every kanji. It will take horribly long for the first weeks but after ~4 months of daily anki practice I'm already at a point where I'm just as fast at memorizing the kanji as I'm at memorizing the actual sound and meaning of a word.
Just take a sheet of paper and write them down over and over again until you have them memorized.

Yes, this is what I did with Kana, started with Hiragana and wrote them back to back on a notebook, then the same thing with Katakana, but its a bit intimidating with Kanji, considering the 2000 characters.

It's a meme. Most people in this thread want validation that their anki grinding is worth something. Anki is really good for N1, but N1 itself is just seen as a certificate of basic language proficiency in Japan.

You can literally work anywhere or do anything in Japan without N1, but there is a caveat. Japanese take great pride in their education system, both technical and academic. If you don't have Japanese qualifications you are going to have trouble unless you have connections. There is a process of qualification conversion, but without being reasonably proficient in Japanese you will fail.

N1 is good for gaijin jobs, like English based office jobs or English liaison personnel. It will open doors IF you have a degree, but in general - for other jobs - you just need to do the relevant Japanese qualifications.

Then there is your race, good luck getting a position if you are going up against other Japanese.

I asked Chinese around me once, but they didn't have both JLPT and BJT.
They looked like that they didn't know about those licences much.

Though, in my defense I will say that moving to the Japanese countryside is a different story to moving to Japan to become a wage-slave in a city.

I fully encourage people to move to Japan to live, because it truly is one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world. But at the same time, I fully discourage people to move to Japan to become just another Japanese worker in the city.

Don't move to Japan to work. You get better pay and conditions in other countries. DO move to Japan if you want to start a business or a farm.

Not entirely sure what you mean. 頭がかゆい時 is a noun phrase and here が is there because, well, it's where it goes. かゆい頭時 is kind of a mangled mess by itself, if that is what you are asking.
