Their economy always depended a bit too much on a colonial system. Then you have a fascist government with that pants-on-head retarded "MUH OVERSEAS EMPIRE! MUH STRONK CUNT TREE! MUH UNITY!" discourse who couldn't ever think the State could be fragmented.

Then the Carnation Revolution kicks in 1974, and Portugal was not prepared to lose the African holdings as Angola and Mozambique. The result? Shit went downhill, and they didn't have enough time to recover.
