When I left active duty I went back to my home state of Pennsylvania and transitioned into the Guard which the state has a partnership program with Lithuania. We send guys over there every year and sometimes your Army sends some guys to us.

I currently don't know if I will be going anytime soon, but sometime over the summer I'm sure they will have some soldiers over there, and normally you will get a couple days to get out and do things. My dad went back in the late 90s and got to tour Vilnius and go out drinking with some Lithuanian soldiers and their translators. I have a lot of Lithuanian Army stuff as well as old soviet military odds and ends he traded for. I believe the unit he was with was called the iron wolves or something like that.

The younger soldiers knew English well enough to hold a normal conversation, the older ones enough to communicate. And that is a generalization. Some weren't very fluent.

As for training and hanging out with them, wasn't too bad. They obviously watched a lot of the same shows, movies, and play many of the same video games. They seemed a bit confused at our humor and took a lot of the jokes we said literally. Euphemisms were hard to get them to understand, and a lot of the other Americans I was with didn't know most other languages don't use them nearly as much as English speakers.

Overall good experience, I'd visit on my own time again or with the Army.

Attached is the patch for the 28th Infantry Division. If you see U.S. soldiers wearing this on their left arm then they are in that division and from Pennsylvania.
