I think he talks about being Scottish more than German, because his mother was actually a Scot from the Outer Hebrides. He still doesn't much, though, because presidential candidates always try to downplay foreign connections. John Kerry actually hid the fact he can speak French. Obama also downplayed his Kenyan roots, because he always acted like he was a regular black American, and not someone whose black heritage in the US begins in 1960.

Why would he want to be associated with Germany? Right now, conservatives in the US think Germany = Muslim ally #1. Besides, American culture has been diverging from European culture for a while now, and Trump is an American nationalist, he wants all white Americans regardless of their European heritage to be treated the same.
