How does Germany's harsh censorship on violence really work in practice nowadays when games are usually distributed online?

regional locks

most ridiculous cut version is still the German Soldier of Fortune 2 which simply moved the whole game to some parallel universe with grey robots and no blood lmao

they're not surrendering, they're praying to allah. It's quintessentially german

But how can those laws be binding to the companies since they operate outside of Germany?

On an unrelated note, I actually prefer Probotector over Contra, I just like the aesthetics.

That game was not optimized for PAL at all, so it plays exactly as Contra on my Famicom.

The Steam store won't let German IPs download certain games for example.
Can be easily passed though by anyone with a bit of common sense so it doesn't really matter much anymore anyway.
Just like how you simply bought the games from across the border back in the days when you wanted uncuts or went online for a patch.

t. proud owner of full blown Nazi RTCW versions from the UK, but don't tell Mutti.

Yes, but why is Valve complying? How are those laws binding to a non-German company?
>Just like how you simply bought the games from across the border back in the days
Which era are you talking about? Back in the NES days, Contra was Probotector in all of Europe because the distribution net at the time didn't allow for different versions in different countries I guess. It continued to be Probotector up into the Playstation era, but then it was probably mostly because they wanted to continue the Probotector brand instead of launching Contra.

Because they are offering their services in Germany which obviously means they have to comply with German law when doing so?
>>

Since it's all internet based, I don't see how that would work unless they have a physical presence in Germany.

Sweden has a government monopoly on virtually all forms of gambling, but there's tons of online casinos headquartered in Malta that's primarily aimed at the Swedish market, they don't have to give a fuck about Swedish regulations.

why german laws so retarded? because a christfag is the chancellor?
>>
>>70233150
No, I'm saying that the laws depend on where you operate from.
>>
I-Is that real?

Australia has something similar when it comes to videogame censorship. Don't know why.

Valve is located in Luxembourg which means it's European business falls under the European jurisdiction, which means it has to follow the law here.
Which also explains why when using a VPN to fake an American IP, you are free to shop in the US steam store.
Why are certain YouTube videos locked based on where you are accessing the site from
Why are streaming services region locked

It's not like it's some alien concept.

>Valve is located in Luxembourg
Why do they have to comply with German law then?

fuck do i know, EU laws or some shit
they obviously have to or otherwise they wouldn't
stop being autistic
