Muhammad's grandson Hussein who, under the impression that he had supporters in Kufa went there only to be betrayed and brutally killed by the command of a general sent by the then caliph Yazid son of Muawiyah as the replacement governor of Kufa to qualm tension. After that the people of Kufa started mourning his death and from that moment on it slowly but surely began to spin into what we see today is the Shi'ite theology. As well they put a lot of emphasis on cursing the two closest companions of Muhammad and one of his wives.

Someone mentioned here that they put a lot of emphasis on Muhammad's family, the Ahl al Bayt. In reality they only pay attention to a select few namely Ali (as you mentioned), Hussein and the lineage of Hussain. Other technically part of the Ahl al Bayt are generally left out or not considered as highly such as Hasan, Hussein's older brother, who was the one who amended peace in a time of tribulation.
