Can someone give me an honest answer on what life in Canada is like?

To me it seems like Canada is an improved version of the US, proper healthcare, education and infrastructure.

How are the living standards compared to Europe? I'm an computer engineer so what could i expect?

Which are the good parts of Canada? I want to live in a modern city with bike lanes and trees with no less than 200k people.

Yeah, i love hockey too

Its literally exactly the same as the US
Their infrastructure is just as shit as ours
Their job market is significantly worse than the US because most things are more saturated (less people to serve, less things to do)

I was just saying to not make life decisions based off what a board where half the population lives in their basement has to say. Do some research yourself, draw your own conclusions, and visit Canada and America to see if you really feel one is better and if you want to immigrate there. Its hard as fuck to immigrate to both so good luck.

And I live right next to NYC I wouldn't say I'm a redneck, inbred, or black because all of those are in the cities.

>>70206929
They're not wrong. It's exceptionally mediocre. The economy is held in a real estate bubble and oil/mining going downhill. We're a glorified petrostate run incredibly poorly (Harper was trash, and so is trudeau). A lot of public stuff is being privatized, prices going up, dollar fell against American.

also, give up the dream of biking everywhere. This isn't Europe. It's North America, you drive a car.

you need a car, no matter where you live. Even if you lived in Toronto, you need a car.

if what you want is a faggy European city where you prance around with your bicycle on your way to the cafe, then stay in Europe. Cool, you love hockey, do you want a fucking medal?

don't go to Alberta, their economy just died. Don't go to BC, that's where the Albertans will be going. Don't go to the Prairies, there's nothing there. Don't go to the Maritimes, there's no jobs. Don't go to Quebec unless you plan on speaking French. Don't come to Ontario, we have a high cost of living where you'll never be able to afford a house nor get a job.

oh, and as a computer engineer, you're going to get paid significantly less money in Canada compared to the US, while having a higher cost of living. But you'll have healthcare so back asswards that you'll die in the waiting room. But hey, you paid taxes for it instead of paying for insurance, so you can gloat about how it's better than America's, right?
>>
Canada is a nice country. I welcome you, as long as your normal. I have no issue.
>>
Friendly reminder that any Canadian who says Canada is shit is an underaged edgelord.

It's certainly not perfect (I'm leaving for better economic opportunities) but I would agree that for most people, it's better than the US.

That said, if you're a computer engineer, you would find a lot more job opportunities in the US and command a much higher salary. Our tech sector is not nearly as competitive as the one south of the border.
>>
>>70208067
I don't think Canada is shit, it's one of the greatest countries in the world. He just needs a dose of reality.

He thinks he's going to come here, live in a mid sized city with plenty of nature and infrastructure, ride his bicycle to work, and live all hunky dory. He needs to realize some shit before he ends up disappointed at the reality.

and who do you think you are, you're the one leaving the country lmao. Where ya headed?

The only thing I think is wrong with canada is the healthcare, socialize health care is always a mistake. Other than that I think Canada is actually a pretty good country.

>>

>How are the living standards compared to Europe?

Top quality in every metric, but not as high as most of the Scandinavian countries. Better standard of living than most of Europe, though. We're also richer.

>Which are the good parts of Canada?
Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Halifax, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa are all really nice cities that all have at least 200,000 people.

In terms of bike lanes, Montreal and Vancouver are by far the best cities for this.

>>70208912
>lacking reading comprehension and can't even spell

As a computer engineer, you would do well as long as you're walking into a job right away.

Metropolitan centres have become nearly impossible to live in on less than six figures, unless you're ok with small apartments, poor enclaves, or half-phased-out student housing... so... expect a commute in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Halifax was kind of getting to that point last I lived there.

That said, everywhere in Canada comes with good and bad in almost equal parts. I could give you a run down of my experiences in/with different cities, but I'll stick to like a top five of places you might actually wind up living in.

Toronto - like a weird, slightly drab, segregated mosaic. There are sterile parts, trying-too-hard-to-be-cool parts, dirty parts, genuinely awesome parts, but they don't really fit together. It's prohibitively expensive in/near the core. Better to live near a train/subway station somewhere and commute in.

Montreal - DRIVING IS TERRIBLE, PARKING IS WORSE! Aside from that, it's an awesome place. Some people will give you shit if you don't speak French, or if you speak Parisian, but despite a generally raised level of aggression, the people and places here are pretty awesome.

Vancouver - like Toronto if it were part of a Seattle/Portland sitcom. There is an enclave of the third world with little or no police presence next to expensive condos. It can be a long trip depending where you are in the city, but Victoria (a beautiful place in my experience, like Vancouver's best-of) is a ferry ride away.

The scenery in Halifax reminds me of Chicago... not sure why. The people here are almost violently pleasant. It's jarring if you aren't used to it.

Calgary is boring. There are some fantastic parts (Kensington), but generally the layout is grey, and orthogonal, and the people kind of fit the mould. There's this vague patriotism (at least pertaining to the Prairies/Calgary), and a slightly conservative mentality.

Check Kelowna or Kamloops.

It's comfy. I didn't get bullied while I studied abroad over there, so I approve.

>To me it seems like Canada is an improved version of the US, proper healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Basically this. We don't have the extreme elements that make the US unlivable, but that also makes us boring.

>I want to live in a modern city with bike lanes and trees with no less than 200k people.

Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto.

Vancouver and Montreal are arguably more liberal-friendly, but Toronto is undoubtedly the economic heart of Canada and would probably offer the most opportunity to a foreign, English-speaking computer engineer.
>>
>>70210849
Vancouver, Toronto, and to a lesser extent Montreal (a city that been in decline for decades, but still better than Murrica) would be acceptable to Europeans. Transit in those cities is not quite up to European standards, but certainly not third world-tier.

You're probably right about the rest of the country, but it is what it is, we are a large, cold, sparsely populated country that isn't compatible with a European style sense of community.
>>
>>70211885
Toronto is completely unacceptable, you can't get from the suburbs to downtown in less than an hour during rush hour. Montreal has Africa-tier roads and construction on every street. Don't know about Vancouver.

Sorry I deleted my post.
>>
>>70211994
The GO is the only real way around during rush hour.
>>
>>70212104
Yes and they only have one stop in downtown, union station. If you want to get anywhere else you gotta pay extra for the subway. Also, you have to take the bus or drive your car to a go station in the first place. It's fucked m8

Who suggested everyone pay $1 per kilometre on the highway to extend the subway again? Can't remember. Toronto is run by a literal bunch of Jews, figuratively speaking.
>>
>>70211994
I never really had that problem, if you know your way around Toronto you can avoid the gridlock on the freeways by taking the right side streets, although it's definitely best to live downtown if you can.

Montreal has a history of decline, it's mainly because of corruption and Quebec separatism. Decades ago it was Canada's main city, but when Quebec separatism became a serious threat everyone who mattered packed up and left for Toronto. Then organized crime got it's hooks into city hall and the construction industry.
>>
>>70207091
>A lot of public stuff is being privatized
This shit happens here as well. It's the easiest way to make sure things decrease in quality and increase in price.
>>
>>70212356
OP says is a computer engineer, so he could easily live the yuppie life. That is ideal for Toronto. Transit downtown is good and the financial district is well serviced by the subway.
>>
>>70212364
Well, you gotta put it into perspective. OP lives in Finland, I've seen European transit systems and trust me, their expectations are much higher. You don't need a car in most cases at all. Medium sized cities in Europe have better transit systems than Toronto. It's ridiculous. And part of the problem is honestly that no one's wants to criticize it. People try to be positive but if everyone keeps saying "it's not that bad", "it could be worse" we're setting our expectations too low imo
>>
>>70212585
Point taken, if OP can get a downtown condo, life will be great in Canada.
>>
>>70212683
How about bike? Lots of people just take the bike when getting around in the city here. My stereotype of USA is that bikes are pretty much non-existant but I don't know how it is in Canada.
>>
>>70212998
If you live and work in downtown Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver it is possible to get by with a bike, but even those cities aren't up to European standards in that regard.
>>
>>70212998
In downtown Toronto it's pretty common, same for Montreal and I guess Vancouver. There aren't many bike lanes, however. Everywhere else, it's suicide to try biking.
