Is it true american schools don't teach cursive writing?

I was taught cursive, although there's a debate if we should.

we were taught a little, but I see little use for it. If cursive were so good, why aren't we typing in cursive font?

It was mandatory. If you didn't do your work in cursive you would get an automatic failure. It was extremely fucking retarded.

I learned it in my early school years, public school about 20 years ago. Never used it outside of signatures as I got older. I have no idea if they still teach it at the age I learned.
