The British Isles had demographics in their favor. United Kingdom always had settlers to send to any part of the world, even to South Africa. Spain on the other hand always had problems with the demography in the Peninsula (always low) and the exit of settlers of Spain to the new world was very restricted.

Spanish settlers were always a small elite, more like the British in India.
