You are a native English speaker. You are the most valuable asset of any language exchange website, fucking act like it and just message various people you like and ignore and delete those that you don't like.
>>
>>69977634
The babby steps are: saying hello/how are you, ask about for how long they have been learning/ their reasons for learning, whether they've been to your country and abroad in general and all the other generic personal stuff.
>>
Is it a waste of time to learn German?
Seems so many Germans already know English, but I find the language interesting.

Maybe Russian would be better for the future?
>>
>>69978310
It's not a waste if your heart is in it and you plan on using it. The choice is yours.
>>
What do you guys think about making a group for students of a particular language?
I've seen that there are several learners of Russian and French who post here, what if we made a group on telegram/discord and invited some native speakers to practise together. If I'm not mistaken Telegram can even maintain anonimity. Thoughts?
>>
bum
>>
>>69980780
I'm already a member of a few language learning groups. But the group is from Tumblr (I got invited by a friend, I don't actually use it).
But the group is autistic as fuck. About 33% are random arabs and Iranians sharing links to various extremist groups, and if you question why there are so many muslims in the group, you get banned.

Telegram is good. You can remain anonymous. You do have to sign up via your phone number, but no one can actually see it.
>>
Might be a dumb question but is it worth it to read a dictionary like a book? Just read through a French-English, German-English, etc dictionary all the way just so to start sewing the seeds of vocabulary in my brain? My biggest problem with language learning has always been in building vocab, my vocab sucks big time and I never understood how people can develop a strong vocabulary because when I would actively study I'd almost always run into a string of words that I just don't know.
>>
>>69981783
Not a good idea IMO. A dictionary is good for expanding vocab and searching terms you don't understand, but I thinki trying to read an actual book in a foreign language is better. Just read, try to piece things together with what you already know. I also think keeping in contact and using your vocab regularly, doing flashcards, will help (I've picked up quite a bit just by loitering around foreigners.)

Best of luck, anon.

Started to learn Russian with Duolingo recently. Doesn't seem that hard. It's similar to Lithuanian and has similar words.
Started to learn it because it'd be really useful. There's a bunch of information in Russian. Also it'd be good to be able to read and understand placards in Russian armored vehicles and such if the need arises

Anyone willing to help me with Greek, or willing to tolerate my broken French? I have good "roots" and a grasp of general Romance language concepts (solid Latin knowledge) so I pick them up fast, pronunciation and grammar wise. It would be a speed course, basically (just can't be arsed all alone). Someone to whip me everyday, relentlessly pushing onwards in conversation, occasional check-ups and such. Portuguese question here.
Does the "d" at the end of verdade sound like a "ch" or a "d"? The woman's accent on Duo made it sound like a "ch" and I'm not sure if it's a regional thing or just the language.
>>
>>70022059
I am, at least I believe so, much more serious than the Interpals people who knows "inter", "ego" and "moneo, monere, monui, monitum"

Left is a noun, the right is a verb, except the "defence/defense" bit. It's just a different way to spell the same word, though you don't want to be a sleazy Amerispeak and use "defence"

Use the patrician way of spelling:
Colour, not color
Honour, not honor
Defense, not defence
Centre, not center
Theatre, not theater
recognize, apologize, organize....recognise, apologise, organise

Brazilians pronounce it sort of like "-ji" (the most mainstream accents at least), Peninsular Portuguese pronounces it roughly like the th-sound in "this" (and they drop the -e often, in fact they drop the e all over the damn place).

It absolutely doesn't matter. Recapitulating the old, starting the new. That's the way it should go. I have patience

I use this website:
http://www.greekgrammar.eu/
You can download the PDFs. And I listen to podcasts with decreased speed on my phone. Just to train my ear. The reason I don't use much material is because I learned ancient Greek in high school so it's a lot of "aha!" for me, rather than completely new, alien elements...I suck balls at the moment, but as time goes, the improvement will come, mashallah

what's the difference between all the courses on the fsi page? programmatic vs basic vs whatever else
>>
>>70015294
Hello Talk has it all.
These days I mostly do voice chats, though.
>>
>>70023135
Programmatic courses usually involve less guidance by the teacher/professor and more focus on the book. It's much more dry than basic courses, which utilise speech more. Think of it as programmatic being a technical manual and a basic course being a history subject book
People usually start with the basic course first and then use the programmatic one as a supplement
>>
>>70023245
I was thinking that I should go with programmatic because it's more self study oriented, and I thought basic was more designed with having an instructor in mind. And obviously I don't have an instructor.
but I guess that's wrong then idk
>>
>>70013366
Underrated
>>
>>70023354
I'd recommend going for a programmatic course if your language is not phonetic
If it's Spanish, for example, then the basic course will suffice as a starter. You can easily turn a basic course exercise into a written one. Hearing is really self-explanatory in Spanish, while it definitely isn't so in, let's say French
Depends on your course

>>
>>70028819
>Translate "The blue square eats paint chips on Thursdays"
>You're now 90% fluent in Esperanto!
>>

standard weak masculine nouns decline
singular: -i (nominative) -a (acc.) -a (dat.) -a (gen.)
plural: -ar (nom.) -a (acc.) -um (dat.) -a (gen.)

weak feminine nouns decline
singular: -a, -u, -u, -u
plural: -ur, -ur, -um, -a

weak neuters decline:
-a. -a, -a, -a
-u, -u, -um, -(n)a

consonants between vowels lose aspiration if applicable (api->abi, aka->aga, etc.)
consonants before other consonants generally get devoiced (allt means l is voiceless, blaðka means ð is voiceless, etc.)
Icelandic has 32 letters in the alphabet and the accents on vowels do not mark length but different sounds altogether, often diphthongs (a = ah, á = ow, o = aw, ó = oa, etc.)

you're pretty much fluent now rite
>>
>>70028960
Yeah. A glottal stop is just when you cut off sound with your throat. If you say the vowels "a e i o u" one after another, you use a glottal stop to separate the sounds.

Lojban has the apostrophe, but it represents the [h] sound.

fun fact, Icelandic has a similar passive-but not really passive construction as Polish where an impersonal pseudo subject is inserted (it was told (to) me that... it was kicked my ass...) but this is a really recent development first attested a few decades ago and considered very improper Icelandic

no Icelandic also has a morphological middle voice by adding -st to the end of the noun (ég klæðist = I get dressed, kakan bakast = the cake is getting baked, bíllin sést = the car is visible etc.) this is proper Icelandic and a feature conserved Old Norse

this has the same function as a passive voice but has this pseudo-active construction
það var sagt mér = I was told
it was said (to) me

það var sigrað hann = he was beaten
it was beaten him

this is a completely new grammatical construction that seems to have been created out of nowhere only a few decades ago and is now standard vernacular for young people

Does anyone have any experience with French and Spanish? How are the languages and how difficult are they for an English speaker to pick up? Do you prefer one over another? I currently know 6 languages but have a lingering feeling that I'm losing proficiency in some. Is there a quick way to see how my level is? (The languages in question are German, French and Italian especially in the written form and less so in the oral one)

You can't expect to keep 6 languages fluent forever. I'd say juggling 3 of them is a doable task. If you can keep the other ones at least at conversational level, you can catch up in a matter of a few months when you actually need it sharp.

>Yeah. I have a lot of motivation to make my goals for this year (complete Core6K, learn all the common-use kanji, reach the conversational level in spoken Japanese, able to understand simpler anime dialogue easily without subtitles).
What is your routine? My goal for 2016 was to learn Core6k and my goal for 2017 is finishing Joyo and getting conversational.

Core6k teaches you 1600 kanji in 10 months (if you do the default 20 cards a day).
Then you'd have to do a minimum of 600 more cards if you keep 1 new kanji per card coming, which is a bit too packed.
In any way, that'd give you a 35 day wiggling space at best.

If you rack up the number of cards and don't go for Core10k (which teaches about 500 of the 600 remaining joyo at a very sparse rhythm), maybe you can do it within one year. Are you doing kanji study somewhere other than Anki? Like in RTK?

Nah, not in every language. By the way, this is one of the ways Czech differs from Slovak - in Czech words beginning with vowels start with a glottal stop, while in Slovak (and moravian Czech) they do not.

why do Scandinavians think Loke, T(h)or, Odi/en is more accurate than the Marvel names when they're not?
>>

þau eru réttari

>>70052990
alls ekki
