If something bad happen with America, we as the 2nd biggest democracy by absolute numbers of population and military would have to march to protect the western world. How this makes you feel?

at least our politicians leave enough for people to live comfortably. Our politicians don't buy votes by promising toasters to poor favelados and sucking the country dry completely by siphoning out tax payer money. Also 17% of the US population is black compared to Brazils self evaluated 50%, which is probably closer to 60%

lel.

We're a constitutional republic. Bit of a difference. It's why anyone complaining about the electoral college or an oligarchy of gov't officials is an ignorant mong.
Advocate changes to the system instead of pretending the system is something it's not.

But anyway, Brazil would do about as well as the UN I figure. Less bickering over words and other pointless resolutions, but about the same in regards to results. Especially on the military side of things.

>there is literally no relevant military on earth that has a communications network on par with the USA
It's actually scary. I don't want to imagine a world without us, and I'm unfortunately not joking around.

For the last fucking time, being a republic is not mutually exclusive with being a democracy. The US is a democracy. Period. End of story.

Regardless. Will this "protection" be as good as in WW1 (sink a porpoise school, say "WE DID OUR JOB!"), or as in WW2 (get drunk in Italy and bug the natives with "MUH HERITAGE")?

I have heard similar things, but he exaggerates.
From what I understand, libbies in Brazil parrot lots of dumb Americans, because Brazil has a similarly sized population of disenfranchised blacks.

I don't pretend to understand Brazil's history. I see the surface level similarities, but I questions the critical, underlying claims.

Namely, I'm not sure that the BRs had slavery based entirely along racial lines (I gather the indians were more easily persuaded), that BRs used religion to advocate for slavery, or that the BRs had their bloodiest war in history fighting to end that peculiar institution. But as I said, know very little. I am simply questioning if the supposed similarities between the US and Brazil (in regards to slavery) are accurate.

Slavery was basically african-only since the jesuits protected the natives and we freed our slaves peacefully near the end of monarchy, Dom Pedro II was against slavery since day 1. Also we had 40kk africans imported here
>>
>>69807830
Representative democracy is a subset of democracy. And we aren't a one party state. We have two main parties in Congress, a few independents in Congress, and there are tons and tons of parties that exist, but aren't popular enough to get representation in Congress. Some of them have representation on lower levels of government.
>>
>>69807158
India is not a democracy
>>
>>69807510
Are you dumb m8?

>>69808076
How is it not? There's a reason they're called the "worlds biggest democracy"
>>
>>69807808
Our process to abolish slavery also was way more peaceful than in the US, but also slower. We made laws that reduced the slave population as the time went by, by banning slave trade and freeing kids of slave mothers, for example. When we abolished slavery, the only setback we had was the aristocracy wanting refunds for their lost slaves, and this eventually led to the end of our monarchy. But there was no civil war or nothing close to what happened in the US
>>
>>69807755
Wew. Did I stumble into a /pol/ conversation?

Also, they are mutually exclusive, by legal definition. It's subtle, but basically, in a democracy the winner of a vote takes all, and there is no protection for the minority. In a republic, the majority is only able to advise the enforcement of legislation. The minority is therefore protected, as the vote is not the only determining factor.
This is because democracy has a gov't that is the people. Republic considers the gov't to be a separate entity that is not necessarily the people. Therefore, in a republic a vote by the people only tells the gov't how they /should/ act, not how they /must/ act.

>We The People
This is where it gets complicated, because America is actually a mix of democracy and a republic. This is why we can bring legislation against the gov't if they fail to act outside acceptable boundaries. In a true republic, this isn't necessarily possible.

Again, I'm talking about the USA as is, not as it should be. I'm not terribly interesting it talking about the "as it should be" side of things. That's a big old can of worms best left to long-form writing.
>>
>>69808127
>>69807755
Ah fuck, because I'm about to get snapped at.

>mutually exclusive
Only the definitions are. It's possible to make a hybrid system (as the United States is) but doing so means it is neither a true democracy nor a true republic.
>>
>>69806696
ignoring whatever the other americans are saying, I say it always gives me a warm re-assurance that Latin America is a democracy. A poor, corrupt, messy one at that, but if Europe and America fall they will be the primary torch-bearers. Blessed be the backup drive of the western world.
>>
>>69808127
Most democracies are republics, some are monarchies.

India is a republic, we're a republic, the US is a republic, Argentina, Germany, Poland, Portugal, France, Switzerland, South Africa, Mexico, etc.

It's just the way the goverment of a nation state organizes itself.
>>
>>69807307

That was really appalling. Should have dissolved the Ape Senate and call elections before letting Dr. Zeus Temer go full ape at her.

Nowhere in the definition of democracy does it say it has to be winner takes all. It simply means that people choose their government by voting, which the US does.
>>
>>69808523

Call for elections (and thus dissolve Parliament ffs) Everyone does it. Well, there's the interim government until a new government is constituted, but their legislative powers are limited.

At least that's how it works in Yurop.
>>
>>69808273
we arent a parliamentarism but a republic like the US. We cant do that. Elected politicians nees to be impeached to leave office

>>>/pol/ is what your looking for
>>
>>69808749
There's no dissolution of parliament in presidential systems.

If you want to know who can call new elections, usually no one. The constitution indicates who's to assume in case some office becomes vacant. In case of the president, the vice-president assumes. If the vice-president can't be president anymore, then the leader of congress, and so it goes on.
>>
>>69808774

Do you have Congress and Presidential elections at the same time? Also, can the President or any other institution advance the elections before the scheduled time?
