The serious answer is that the English used to pronounce it as "rowt" too. But great lengths were taken in England to standardise English in the 18th, 19th and even early 20th centuries and pronunciations were agreed upon and changed. A lot of the way Americans pronounce things now is simply how the original English colonists used to pronounce things.
