They were a part of Russian Empire for like a century (we took them from Sweden during Napoleonic wars). But after communists revolution they've rebelled and split away. So they were not part of Soviet Union or Warsaw Pact.

Some do better like Belarus, or Khazastan?, some slightly worse like Balts that literally depend on EU money donations to function and hemorrhage population, but otherwise live decently, and others much worse, because they got torn apart in choosing between Russia and EU, like Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, etc.

Yes, after the union collapsed, Russia was a total shithole. I was a kid in the 90's and gangs, crime, and drugs were everywhere, it was like a huge Detroit without blacks. Shit really started to change mid 2000's, an it's way better now than ever before.

Oh good old soviet times. Everyone was thin and healthy so there was no need for shops full of foods, only minimal amount of basic stuff. I remember it was a problem to buy two identical toys, even if someone had two children, because it was non communist thing to do or smth. Was difficult to get a car, you had to wait in line for years and there was people offering double price then you got one. Also it costed crazy money (now you literally can get one for month pay). Car quality was epicly shitty, well at least russian ones. You had to check if wheels were put on properly just when you bought one from the factory...
Same crap with housing, had to wait in line years until you got your flat in some random place... or didn't get at all, but hey it was for free...
Also there was no unemployment. it did not matter how shitty you worked you always got a job. It was really good for lazy alcoholic people. You drink all the time. It was socially acceptable to be drunk. Even at work...

Oh boy such a great times. Some people miss these times. Some of those who live in poverty now. They used to work in factories when they were young. Life was simpler for them back then.
