Agriculture originated in central America, and it took time to spread north because the crops had to be cultivated for colder and colder climates.

The Teotihuacanos and Aztecs of central Mexico had the core of their territories west of the Tehuantepec isthmus aka North America, the Toltecs extended as far north as Durango and Tamaulipas, this state (which borders the US) also being later occupied by the Huastecs who were bronze working peoples.

In the Mexican northwest Paquimé (in the state of Chihuahua and very near the US border) built pictured which I think is fair to say goes beyond mud huts, these people worked copper and produced high quality ceramics and were traders as well with connections reaching to central Mexico.

There were some worthy civilizations in what is today the US but I only speak for Mexico, which was certainly home to advanced civilizations in north America.
