this is hard... there is a couple of them with a little creativity. but generally it's impossible.

visegrád -> high castle
székesfehérvár -> chairy white castle
>>
Lisbon -> Lisbon
Braga -> Braga
Beja -> Beja
Évora -> Évora
Bragança -> Bragança
Coimbra -> Coimbra
These are all ancient and they mean nothing besides themselves, at this point

Oporto -> O Porto -> The port
Faro -> sense of smell (???)
Castelo Branco -> White Castle
Almada -> Full of Soul (kek, it actually has a lot of niggers)
Madeira -> Wood
Funchal -> Place of Funchos (a tree)

Ponta Delgada -> Slim tip

Heh, some are actually pretty cool.

Fun fact, Bragança's traditional English name is Braganza, and Bragance in French.
>>
>>69156144
I think that the ç/z/ci is a recent split in Portuguese/Galician/Spanish.

Galiza -> Galicia
Valença -> Valencia

Most foreign languages latinize (or archaic-ise) the ç's to z's. Latin languages just use their respective suffix.
>>
>>69156204
It is, Galicians also spell it Braganza. That's also why Brasilians still have a lot of archaic spellings like Luíz, Souza, etc.
>>

NO. Jolly! Jolly Harbor.
>>
>>69156265
Yes, that's early XX century stuff, when we changed.

It's weird, because my name has a ç (spelt like s) and foreigners always use a 'k' sound, so I often have them use a z instead.
>>
>>69156314
Yeah, I know the problem. People pronounce my name fairly weirdly, they don't pronounce the s like a z.

Mocквa - Moscow - ??? no one knows for sure but historians suggest it comes from an obsolete word meaning 'swamp'
Caнкт-Пeтepбypг - St. Petersburg - Saint Peter's fortress
Beликий Hoвгopoд - Velikiy Novgorod - great new city
Hижний Hoвгopoд - Nizhniy Novgorod - lower new city (meaning down the river from the old new city)
Cмoлeнcк - Smolensk - Resin city

Якyтcк - Yakutsk - Yakut city (Yakuts are the natives of the region)
Apхaнгeльcк - Arkhangelsk - Archangel city

Boлгoгpaд - Volgograd - city on the Volga
Пeтpoзaвoдcк - Petrozavodsk - city of Peter's factories
Maгнитoгopcк - Magnitogorsk - city on the magnet mountain
Hoвoкyзнeцк - Novokuznetsk - new city of blacksmithery/smiths

Many city names lost their apparent meaning and can't be translated anymore. Many are named after rivers they're on or native ethnicities.
All the -sk cities don't actually have 'city' in their name but it's a morpheme that indicates it's at least a town, as opposed to a small shitty village. Grad/gorod means city.

It's complicated, but I'll try:

Zurich: from the Greek word starvos, means something like cross or martyr's cross. Basically Zurich means Crosscity of Christ. Zurich has been a very important city in reformation.

Bern: Berchthold, the Duke of Zähringen told his men to go out and hunt down and kill the first animal in the woods. So they found and killed a bear, that's why there's bears everywhere on flags there etc.

Basel: Goes back to the Romans, from the family name Basilius. But we don't really know who that was. It could also go back to the Greek word for king.
