I'd immigrate there to move to like a little forest homestead up north and plant red wood trees and other things.

Most of the Moriori that are left are about as Moriori as Americans who claim to be "Italian" or "Irish"
The Moriori were literally just a tribe of pacifistic Maori anyway so from an ethnic standpoint I don't even know if you can call what happened to them a genocide.
Now that the Maori have learned not to eat people there isn't much call for the Moriori to flee the mainland for an isolated island anymore, Chatham Island is just an airstrip, a few Department of Conservation huts and some die-hard fishermen.

Their oral history claims an even older people being their before they arrived and there is a wonderful book exploring the likelihood of some distinct people being there written by a part Maori professor. Truth be told looking at old pictures there seems to be a subset of quite distinct islanders even though that a not a popular statement to make now and days

Still it'd be lovely to see an indigenous autonomous zone in NZ like a reservation system here with tribal sovereignty.
