Why does nationalism even exist today after all the problems it's caused before? Because it's a natural part of human nature echoed in social politics.

These smaller states have different ethnic and cultural identities, and those who have tried to blend them into one state before have seen disasters. It comes with feeling under represented, kicked out of administration, different policies held to different cultural beliefs, ect.
If these nations were to band together, I would hypothesize it would take at least 5 more generations of cultural-cooperation and tolerance.
