The Brits promised to support the Greeks in an invasion of Anatolia after the Turks heavy defeat in WW1, but they, along with France, were war weary themselves and couldn't provide much support. The Russians had turned to communism and didn't care much about supporting their fellow Orthodox and instead supported Kemal's effort against the Greeks in order to screw with the other powers and perhaps gain a new ally. Thus the Greeks launched an invasion of Anatolia and lost. The Treaty of Sevres could not be enforced and was replaced with the Treaty of Lausanne which established the modern borders and the Turkish republic. Due to the failure and Turks slaughtering Christians (Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians) the two agreed upon a population exchange as well which traded all muslims in Greece for Christians in Turkey. The city of Smyrna (Izmir) was burned down. The Greek population of Constantinople was reduced from 1/3 to zero within a few decades. Greek ambitions in Anatolia which had been high after their success in the Balkan Wars were quelled with this defeat. Kemal Mustafa Ataturk is celebrated as a national father and hero in Turkey for repelling the attacks.
