First off, there's a religious divide. There are Catholic and Orthodox slavs. This is a big conflict in Ukraine and between Croatia/Serbia. Includes burning people throughout history. Rome or Constantinople.

Then there's a genetical divide. Russians, Ukrainians and Belarussians are completely different from the rest. Czech and Poles have significant differences between each others. Al of them share more genetic DNA among themselves and fucking Hungarians than they do with south "Slavs" Except maybe Polish and Croats on some level. Down there it's a mess between Slovenia-Croatia-Bosnia-Serbia. Oh, and it's questionable how much "slav genes" there even is among Bulgarians.

Then there's politics. Russia always dominated the east and played with Mongols for centuries. These mongols have been a non element in western slavic countries. Poland and Czechia were always in very close contact with Germany and Lithuania which shaped their history. Serbia looks to Russia as its big brother, while also sharing a comon history with Turks for centuries. Slovenia and Croatia have a 1000 years of being the closest with Hungary and Austria. So there's a definitive east/west disagreement that runs deep among slavic countries.

Literally the only thing we all share are the languages.
Panslavia is an illadvised 19th century French revolution inspired fiction. It's based on nothing and no less dangerous than communism.

We still share lots of same aestetics west does not and recognise ourselves as a distinct group growing in paralel with the west, but still distinct from it. So what binds us all, slavs, is more the feeling of being different to the west than being the same.

Russia kept them out. Huns attacked? Croatia repelled them. Turks invade? Pope calls Croatia the bulwark of Christianity, Poles join in in the decisive battle. Communism looms over us? We're all equally fucked.
Point is we've shared many threats.

So those two + language are our similarities. And that's pretty much it. No basis for a political union.
If we united it'd have to be 3 different unions + balts.
