Cats are more common in urbanized, industrialized societies, because they don't take up as much space or time, and no one needs dogs for any practical purpose like herding or security.

I think this is mainly about the society of each country, and not about liking or disliking cats and dogs.

If in a country there is a lot of single people who live alone, they will prefer to own cats because a cat can be left alone the 8 hours you work + the 2 hours you spend commuting to and from work, while you cant do the same to a dog.

this is more about family structure than about dogs or cats.
